Over 60% of English comes from Latin roots, and over 10% comes from Greek roots, not to mention prefixes and suffixes! Learning and understanding the way these roots work will help you learn and comprehend the English language at a much deeper level than mere memorization. You'll not only be able to develop your vocabulary at a quicker pace, but your understanding of existing vocabulary will be deepened as well as you begin to comprehend why our words mean what they do. By studying one root a day with its definition, source and derivatives, you'll have completed 108 words by the end of a typical school year. The spiral format provides excellent retention, as you preview, learn and the continue to use material throughout the year, never allowing your brain to rest! Instructions are provided in the beginning, and the majority of the book consists of lists of roots and their examples and sources. Glossary included, 51 pages, softcover.

Tiffany Robinson5 Stars Out Of 5September 30, 2010Tiffany RobinsonThe things I enjoyed most about this book is that it is not a worksheet format and it has lots of ideas for integrating what you are learning into games that can be played using everyday situations. Also, since your student is making their own index of words and creating definitions based on what different root words mean it also encourages higher level critical thinking skills. I would highly recommend this book to any child third grade through high school.
Barbara Lawson5 Stars Out Of 5January 26, 2010Barbara LawsonI introduced this book to my child (ten years old) and since then she has been able to do the work on her own. She enjoys the games, also, which we do together. We give it a thumbs up!
CC Cameron5 Stars Out Of 5October 19, 2009CC CameronFrom my 9th grader - "I love this vocabulary program!" I never thought I'd hear those words come from her! We have used a few different vocabulary programs to learn word roots, but this one is the first one that is not only simple, but effective! It has helped with spelling as well. The book suggests learning 3 roots per week, and then playing root word games the other 2 days. Instructions for games are included. By the end of the school year, you will have learned 108 roots (including suffixes and prefixes) that will enable you to decipher the meanings of thousands of words.Good for almost any age (once child can read and write), I would have used this earlier if I had known about it.
