Author/Artist Review

Author: Linda Mercadante
Submitted: December 01, 2005

Tell us a little about yourself.  I teach theology at a Methodist seminary and have a Ph.D. from Princeton. Our seminary has a strong degree program in counseling, including addiction treatment counseling, and I have learned very much from our students.

What was your motivation behind this project?  First, I wanted to help our students see that Christian theology and the addiction recovery ethos are not opposites. Second, I wanted to give people a better understanding of AA's roots so they could understand why saying "I'm spiritual but not religious" is problematic.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  An understanding of the spiritual roots of Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 Step groups, the history of AA as it emerged from The Oxford Group, and a better understanding of how Christianity and the 12 step movement can learn from each other.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  Ernest Kurtz, who did an excellent history of AA, helped me better understand AA. Beyond that, I have studied the history of religious belief and find that there are some common themes among Western faith groups.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I speak on this issue for church groups, seminary classes, adult education, medical schools, and the field of psychology.
