ChristianBookPreviews.comacation Bible Snooze by Mike Thaler focuses on an elementary-school-age boy who has no interest in attending vacation Bible school. He'd rather play basketball, watch television, and go swimming. His mother tells him of all the past themes, such as "God's Rodeo" and "God's Safari," and then mentions that year's theme is "God's Universe." In his mind the boy imagines all sorts of venues and scenarios related to each of these themes, with everything from wild animals to underwater trips in a submarine. Finally, when the boy learns that VBS has snacks and movies and games and prizes and crafts, he decides he should give it a try. What he discovers as the best part of VBS is that it draws him closer to the Lord.
Using exaggerated cartoon scenes provided by artist Jared Lee, this book provides comedic elements that youngsters can identify with. More importantly, it diffuses any worries or anxieties young children may have about having to "go to school" during summer vacation. It makes VBS sound exciting and fun, and underscores the message that children can learn more about God there, too. Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
