Series: Red River of the North
She had promised herself that once they left the fjords of Norway, she would not look back. After three long years of scrimping and saving to buy tickets for their passage to America, Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund, along with their son, Thorliff, finally arrive at the docks of New York City. It was the promise of free land that fed their dream and lured them from their beloved home high above the fjords of Norway in 1880. Together with Roald's brother Carl and his family, they will build a good life in a new land that promises untold wealth and vast farmsteads for their children. As they join the throngs of countless immigrants passing through Castle Garden, they soon discover that nothing is as they had envisioned it. Appalled by the horrid stories of fellow immigrants bilked of all their money and forced to live in squalid living conditions, the Bjorklunds continue their long journey by train as far as Grand Forks. From there a covered wagon takes them into Dakota Territory, where they settle on the banks of the Red River. But there was no way for them to foresee the price they will have to pay to wrest a living from the indomitable land. The virgin prairie refuses to yield its treasure without a struggle. Will they be strong enough to overcome the hardships of that first winter?
Besides writing both books and articles, Lauraine teaches at writer's conferences across the country and has an active speaking career. She and husband Wayne have two grown sons, four grand dogs and live in the country where Lauraine can garden, sew, do crafts, cross stitch, enjoy her birds and eventually have a horse again.

Got this free ebook and I am hooked. Since then bought the rest of this series and plan to get the next series continuing the legacy. Books are filled with hardship, triumph and God's unfailing love as the immigrants make a life in the Dakota territories. Author brings each character to life with their own personalities, struggles, and accomplishments. Can't say enough good about this book.

This book tells of the struggles and heartbreaks that the immigrants who came to the US had. It is very touching how everyone works together to better themselves and their families.

The book was an excellent depiction of the struggles of immigrants settling on the frontier. From the time they left Norway, their daily lives were full of struggles and hardships but still they perserved.

Being born of Norwegian immigrants myself, I could relate to many of their ways. The foods they made, the way the neighbors all helped each other during harvest time, their traditions, even the family names are all in my genealogy. What a pleasure to read! Lauraine Snelling captured the lifestyle and ways of the Norwegian immigrants perfectly. I look forward to reading all of her books.
