She had promised herself that once they left the fjords of Norway, she would not look back. After three long years of scrimping and saving to buy tickets for their passage to America, Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund, along with their son, Thorliff, finally arrive at the docks of New York City. It was the promise of free land that fed their dream and lured them from their beloved home high above the fjords of Norway in 1880. Together with Roald's brother Carl and his family, they will build a good life in a new land that promises untold wealth and vast farmsteads for their children. As they join the throngs of countless immigrants passing through Castle Garden, they soon discover that nothing is as they had envisioned it. Appalled by the horrid stories of fellow immigrants bilked of all their money and forced to live in squalid living conditions, the Bjorklunds continue their long journey by train as far as Grand Forks. From there a covered wagon takes them into Dakota Territory, where they settle on the banks of the Red River. But there was no way for them to foresee the price they will have to pay to wrest a living from the indomitable land. The virgin prairie refuses to yield its treasure without a struggle. Will they be strong enough to overcome the hardships of that first winter?
Besides writing both books and articles, Lauraine teaches at writer's conferences across the country and has an active speaking career. She and husband Wayne have two grown sons, four grand dogs and live in the country where Lauraine can garden, sew, do crafts, cross stitch, enjoy her birds and eventually have a horse again.
DavidBeckhamBeverly Hills, FLAge: Over 65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5A bit of history and God's messages.November 22, 2014DavidBeckhamBeverly Hills, FLAge: Over 65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was a little uncertain as to whether or not I would enjoy this series but decided to give it a try. I appreciate the way the writer includes scripture and life lessons even in the smallest ways but the message is still there and comes through. I would and have recommended this series to others. I also pass the books on once I have read them.
Pegg ThomasOssineke, MIAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5EpicAugust 21, 2014Pegg ThomasOssineke, MIAge: 45-54Gender: femaleI wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I'm reading the series on the recommendation - and loan - from a friend. But wow... I didn't expect the grittiness within these pages.
The raw emotions, the struggles, the realities of life with no sugar coating to glaze them over. This is powerful reading. It's the type of book where you want to have the next one in the series sitting next to you when you finish the one you're reading. This isn't a simple "happily ever after" type of story. It more real than that.
I highly recommend this book to people who like historical fiction, well researched and true to its time period. Set in North Dakota in the 1880s, Lauraine Snelling paints a picture of hardship, sacrifice, and triumph over the untamed prairie. But it's not without cost.
Ingeborg Bjorklund immigrates from Norway with her husband, his son, his brother and sister-in-law. They make their way to the plains of North Dakota and find a land that will work as hard to break them as they work to tame the land.
Mrs GSouthwest PAAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Love this series!February 26, 2014Mrs GSouthwest PAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Got this free ebook and I am hooked. Since then bought the rest of this series and plan to get the next series continuing the legacy. Books are filled with hardship, triumph and God's unfailing love as the immigrants make a life in the Dakota territories. Author brings each character to life with their own personalities, struggles, and accomplishments. Can't say enough good about this book.
