Publisher's Description

Burning pyres, nuns on the run, stirring courage, and comic relief: the Protestant Reformation is a gripping tale, packed with drama. But what motivated the Reformers? And what were they really like?

The Unquenchable Flame, a lively, accessible, and fully informative introduction to the Reformation by Michael Reeves, brings to life the movement’s most colorful characters (Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, The Puritans, etc.), examines their ideas, and shows the profound and personal relevance of Reformation thinking for today.

Also included are a lengthy Reformation timeline, a map of key places in the Reformation, further reading suggestions, and, in this U.S. edition, a new foreword by 9 Marks Ministries president Mark Dever.

Author Bio

Michael Reeves is the Theological Advisor for the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF), a charity supporting evangelism in higher education throughout the United Kingdom. He was previously associate minister at All Souls Church, Langham Place and holds a doctorate in systematic theology from King's College, London.

Mark Dever is senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC and president of 9Marks. He holds degrees from Duke University (B.A.), Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div.), The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Theol.), and Cambridge University (PH.D.).

Endorsements

Well-written and enjoyable, The Unquenchable Flame has an element missing from so many dry histories and especially introductory histories–it has character. With occasional dashes of wry or ironic humor and through a decidedly non-academic telling of this great moment in history, Michael Reeves has written an excellent introduction to the Reformation. Mark Dever declares it “quite simply, the best brief introduction to the Reformation I have read.” And I am inclined to agree. The Unquenchable Flame is a book you will want to add to your collection.

Great book on the Reformation & Reformers who furthered it. I am very knowledgeable on Reformation History & have read many, many Puritan Authors books and yet I still learnt facts I did not know. This is an easy reading overview of the reason for & different views of the Reformers with Catholic Theology and Papist rule. If You do not know the meaning of "Justification by Faith Alone" (ALONE!!!) or Scripture Alone (as GOD's WORD) as the Ultimate authority over ALL manmade rules/Kings/Popes/Theology then this is "A MUST READ". Simple & not Heavy, yet very Meaty. A great starting point for further study of the Reformation History to this present age.

This is a wonderful tool for those curious about church history. With very clear, concise language, this author visits the reformation in every European country affected, from Germany to Scotland, never losing sight of the true theme of the reformation, that salvation is an unmerited, free gift. An idea that rocked the world, then firmly under the authority of the Catholic Church.
