Abby Johnson quit her job in October 2009. That simple act became a national news story because Abby was the director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas who, after participating in her first actual abortion procedure, walked across the road to join the Coalition for Life.
Unplanned is a heartstopping personal drama of life-and-death encounters, a courtroom battle, and spiritual transformation that speaks hope and compassion into the political controversy that surrounds this issue. Telling Abbys story from both sides of the abortion clinic property line, this book is a must-read for anyone who cares about the life versus rights debate and helping women who face crisis pregnancies.
The book begins with an ultrasound-guided abortion, providing a graphic view of the process. Johnson tells of volunteering at Planned Parenthood as a young adult. In this story she shares her education, career, and family, but also delves into deeper issues such as her beliefs, secrets, and desires. Slowly, Johnson realizes truths about herself and the organization she works for, and she decides to leave. Through it all, the reader is able to get a brief look at both Planned Parenthood and the Coalition for Life, a pro-life organization near Johnson's clinic. Serious topics and ideas are studied, establishing that in this broken world there are seldom black and white issues, but many gray ones.
Whereas unPlanned clearly reveals the importance of trusting God's timing and purpose, one cannot read it expecting answers on major issues (finances, long-range psychological problems) involving the reproductive rights of women. While there were still many complicated elements left unaddressed, other details are at times repetitive. In this well-written book, readers come alongside Johnson during her difficult and beautiful journey. Rachelle Bontreger, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

She tells, from her perspective, how she came to work for Planned Parenthood, her beliefs and values, her personal experiences with abortion, her job responsibilities, etc. She explains both the pro-choice and pro-life perspectives when addressing personal, political, ethical issues. She describes her experience of assisting during an actual abortion for the first time and how that experience completely changed her worldview.
This book is a must read for anyone who has any interest in the abortion debate. While Abby Johnson is now clearly pro-life, she very delicately addresses the viewpoint from the pro-choice side. As someone who has had abortions, worked for the abortion industry, and now is a pro-life advocate, she is able to give a unique perspective on the subject. She now has a heart for the women and men who work in the abortion industry and her ministry involves helping those who want to leave the industry. I highly recommend this book. It gave me insight into the mind of someone who had the pro-choice perspective that I may not have otherwise considered. When I discuss abortion and my very pro-life views with people who do not agree with me, I often reference Abby Johnson's story and recommend this book.

CathyMaysville, KyAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent read.August 3, 2013CathyMaysville, KyAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This story shows how easy it is to get caught up on the wrong side even if you have been raised in a Christian home. It also shows how God can use these negative experiences for His glory. It shows a lot about God's grace & mercy in the world of abortion. The author Abby was recruited as a college student to Volunteer for Planned Parenthood on the pretense of helping women & decreasing abortions. Eventually, it leads her to a paid position & a director of a clinic that indeeds help women with family planning & health issue but also does abortions. Eventually she is told that abortions must increase to help increase revenue for Planned Parenthood. Abby must then choose between right & wrong. She must face a legal battle when she leaves & faces betrayal from trusted friends.

She shows the value of people who look at the individuals involved in all sides of the battle, not the normal political anger.
susanAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Eye-opening!April 15, 2012susanAge: 55-65Gender: femaleMeets Expectations: 5This book really opened my eyes to the point where I called my local pro-life clinic, and signed up as a volunteer. I even participated in a March for Life, and I used to be pro-choice.
Everyone should read this book. There are so many lies and half truths out there, and we can't rely on the media to tell us what is really going on with abortion clinics. Thanks, Abby
