I learned a lot about autism in this book, but also realized it truly would take a miracle to accomplish what happened in the story. It could be dangerous for Kingsbury to suggest that vaccinations are a possible cause of autism. While it has been suggested as a possibility, many may react to it by withholding shots for their children with possible fatal results. Millions of children avoid serious diseases by being vaccinated and do not become autistic! I did enjoy the book, however, and would recommend it as food for thought.

I highly recommend this book. It was very enlightening for me to read about autism. The current cover is a new one and it looks more like a book that teens would like; however, it is for granny's, too! You won't regret reading Unlocked, and then you'll want to pass your copy around for others to read.

I work as an Intervention Specialist with students who have multiple disabilities, including autism. So many times, these individuals are judged by their seemingly irrational or random behaviors. This book, although fictional, offers a glimpse into the possible thought processes of an individual with autism. People with autism often perceive, process and react differently than others, but that is not to say that there are not valid rationales behind their actions and reactions. Indeed, as illustrated in the story, they may be intelligent, talented, and have unique strengths and abilities to offer, if only provided with patience, understanding and appropriate supports.

Having a child with autism often does precipitate relationship difficulties within marriages, families, and in social circles, as reflected in the relationships of the Holden's, their families and friends. The emotional and spiritual elements interwoven in the story also demonstrate the power of prayer, faith, and perseverance.

I enjoy Karen Kingsbury's books, and "Unlocked" is no exception.

I was completely turned off and didn't even read further once I realized this book advocated the misleading premise that vaccinating can lead to autism (the evidence just doesn't support this yet, while evidence does support the incredible benefits of vaccinating). If I had done my research more carefully, I never would have purchased this book. That theme just totally turned me off. How it developed past the very beginning, I can't say, as I felt like I was reading a propaganda piece right from the very beginning, and in literature, that is a BIG turn off to me. Kingsbury is a great author, otherwise, and I have enjoyed her other works.
