Product Description

Holden Harris, 18, is locked in a prison of autism where he's been since he was a happy, boisterous three-year-old. At school he is bullied by kids who do not understand that despite his quiet ways and quirky behaviors, Holden is very happy and socially normal on the inside, where he lives in a private world all his own. Then one day the head cheerleader and star of the high school drama production is rehearsing when Holden stops and listens, clearly drawn to the music. Lauren Reynolds notices and takes an interest in him, learning about autism and eventually helping Holden win a spot in the school play.

At the same time Lauren makes a dramatic discovery. Long ago, her parents and Holden's parents were good friends, and she and Holden played together until his diagnosis of autism, at which time Lauren's mother distanced herself from the friendship. Now Lauren's mom and her MLB baseball player father are trapped in an unhappy marriage and a life that is shallow and meaningless. Not until a tragedy takes place at the high school does Lauren take a public stand against the way the more popular privileged kids treat those who are different.

At the same time, Lauren continues to be a friend to Holden and in time their mothers realize that something special is happening. Hurts from the past are dealt with and all around Holden miracles begin to happen in various relationships. The greatest miracle is the change in Holden, himself, and everyone is stunned by the transformation they witness. Ultimately, the community comes to understand that many people walk around in a personal prison and that only by love and faith can the doors become unlocked, the way they dramatically do for Holden Harris.

Publisher's Description

Before You Take a Stand … You Got to Take a Chance. Holden Harris is an eighteen-year-old locked in a prison of autism. Despite his quiet ways and quirky behaviors, Holden is very happy and socially normal---on the inside, in a private world all his own. In reality, he is bullied at school by kids who only see that he is very different. Ella Reynolds is part of the “in” crowd. A cheerleader and star of the high school drama production, her life seems perfect. When she catches Holden listening to her rehearse for the school play, she is drawn to him … the way he is drawn to the music. Then, Ella makes a dramatic discovery---she and Holden were best friends as children. Frustrated by the way Holden is bullied, and horrified at the indifference of her peers, Ella decides to take a stand against the most privileged and popular kids at school. Including her boyfriend, Jake. Ella believes miracles can happen in the unlikeliest places, and that just maybe an entire community might celebrate from the sidelines. But will Holden’s praying mother and the efforts of Ella and a cast of theater kids be enough to unlock the prison that contains Holden? This time, friendship, faith, and the power of a song must be strong enough to open the doors to the miracle Holden needs.

Publisher's Weekly

An average of 1 in 110 children has autism spectrum disorder, an astonishing number that also bespeaks sadness and frustration on the part of lots of parents of autistic children. Popular and prolific novelist Kingsbury (Ever After) takes on autism in the story Holden Harris, an 18-year-old high school student with autism and target for high school bullies. Popular Ella Reynolds, star of the high school's musical Beauty and the Beast, sticks up for Holden against her friends who are his tormentors. Added to the complex topics of autism and bullying is a subplot about teen-age suicide, making for far more weight than this story can bear. Her legions of fans may well find this nicey-nicey story resolution inspirational; that is the Kingsbury brand. But given the gravity of the subjects, what one finds inspirational another will likely see a naïve and unpersuasive fantasy that Walt Disney does a whole lot better, with music. Kingsbury is in over her head. (Oct.) Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

I learned a lot about autism in this book, but also realized it truly would take a miracle to accomplish what happened in the story. It could be dangerous for Kingsbury to suggest that vaccinations are a possible cause of autism. While it has been suggested as a possibility, many may react to it by withholding shots for their children with possible fatal results. Millions of children avoid serious diseases by being vaccinated and do not become autistic! I did enjoy the book, however, and would recommend it as food for thought.

I highly recommend this book. It was very enlightening for me to read about autism. The current cover is a new one and it looks more like a book that teens would like; however, it is for granny's, too! You won't regret reading Unlocked, and then you'll want to pass your copy around for others to read.

I work as an Intervention Specialist with students who have multiple disabilities, including autism. So many times, these individuals are judged by their seemingly irrational or random behaviors. This book, although fictional, offers a glimpse into the possible thought processes of an individual with autism. People with autism often perceive, process and react differently than others, but that is not to say that there are not valid rationales behind their actions and reactions. Indeed, as illustrated in the story, they may be intelligent, talented, and have unique strengths and abilities to offer, if only provided with patience, understanding and appropriate supports.

Having a child with autism often does precipitate relationship difficulties within marriages, families, and in social circles, as reflected in the relationships of the Holden's, their families and friends. The emotional and spiritual elements interwoven in the story also demonstrate the power of prayer, faith, and perseverance.

I enjoy Karen Kingsbury's books, and "Unlocked" is no exception.

I was completely turned off and didn't even read further once I realized this book advocated the misleading premise that vaccinating can lead to autism (the evidence just doesn't support this yet, while evidence does support the incredible benefits of vaccinating). If I had done my research more carefully, I never would have purchased this book. That theme just totally turned me off. How it developed past the very beginning, I can't say, as I felt like I was reading a propaganda piece right from the very beginning, and in literature, that is a BIG turn off to me. Kingsbury is a great author, otherwise, and I have enjoyed her other works.
