Dr. Richard Blackaby is president of Blackaby Ministries International as well as the Chancellor of the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary. He’s the author of Putting a Face on Grace and coauthor of numerous books with his father, Henry Blackaby, including Spiritual Leadership, Hearing God’s Voice and Experiencing God Day by Day. A former senior pastor, he served as president of the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary from 1993 to 2006. He was also managing editor and contributing author for The Blackaby Study Bible. He and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of three children, and live in Cochrane, Alberta.

In his challenging new book, Unlimiting God, Richard Blackaby says, “Each of us must decide how closely we want to walk with God. We can choose mediocrity in our Christian life, or we can resolve to go deeper spiritually, growing in our love for God and increasing our capacity to hear from Him.”

According to Blackaby, as we mature in our Christian walk, we sometimes lose the excitement of our original encounter. We become less committed to Bible study and prayer, and if we allow it, distractions can creep in and crowd out our zeal for God and the work He wants to accomplish through us. Over time, we hear God’s voice less and less, and we wonder why He reveals himself to others and not to us.

Obviously, the problem isn’t God. As Blackaby says, “If we have a shallow walk with God, we cannot expect to receive deep revelations from Him.”

Blackaby points out that when we are unwilling to commit ourselves wholeheartedly to our relationship with the Lord, we limit God’s work in us, and we place restrictions on the amount of service we are able accomplish. God knows our potential, and He wants to use our circumstances to develop our faith and increase our capacity to serve Him, but we must surrender and do whatever it takes to draw closer to Him.

We also limit God when we limit what we believe God can or will do in our lives. When answers to our prayers don’t come in the time or way we think they should, we stop praying—and we stop believing—because we fail to realize that God allows troubles and difficulties so that we will become more mature, trusting believers. Instead of embracing the work God is doing through our troubles, we entertain doubt and place limitations on what God can do for and through us.

Blackaby came to realize in his own life, “The limit to my experience of God’s power rested not with God, but with me. His power is limitless; my faith is still growing.”

Unlimiting God examines the truths from scripture about how to remove the limits we place on God and ourselves.
