Though I usually don’t read books like Uncommon Marriage because I am not married or planning to marry, I did find a lot of informative points in this book. The author teaches his readers using amusing stories from his own marriage to explain how couples can make their marriages meaningful and strong. I really liked how he seemed to make a correlation between putting God first and how it made his marriage and faith stronger. The author shares many personal stories on how God helped his marriage not only through the good times but also the rough ones. The author is very honest when he says that marriages are not easy and every couple will go through storms but if they are committed to God and making their marriage work, then it will make the difference in how strong the marriage is. I enjoyed this book so much I gave it to my brother to read in case he and his girlfriend ever decide to get married. I also recommend this book to all newlyweds and those who are engaged because reading it just might make a difference.

I'm unsure exactly how to review this book. When I first saw this book on the list for the summer reading program, I assumed it would give advice on a God-centered marriage with selected stories and such from their marriage. What is, in fact, is a memoir of their marriage. I liked their story but the way that they chose to "tell" it was very hard to read at times. It moved very slowly and was at times dull. That being said, they did have some good advice. But again, it was just their story told and then at the very end of this book there was a few pages stating tips on how to have an uncommon marriage with pages referencing examples from their marriage. I was disappointed. They do seem like a wonderful, committed couple, to each other and to the Lord.

This book was not what I expected. I was expecting more of a principles and applications book with maybe a few stories thrown in for examples. Instead, it was the journey of Tony and Lauren from the day they met until the present. I really enjoyed reading the book. Being an NFL coach put demands on both Tony and Lauren that are different from what most marriages have, but watching how they continued to put God and each other and family first is impressive. Their marriage stood strong and survived the pressure of being public figures. The emphasis they put on taking regular time for each other--for just the two of them is important along with the importance of good communication. I also was impressed with the emphasis on being grateful even when you don't feel like. I needed that encouragement. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

Former NFL coach Tony Dungy and his wife, Lauren, wrote this book to tell their love story and show what keeps their marriage strong. Through personal examples, they give principles to help the reader's marriage. I thought the book was interesting and a help to many couples, whether they have a good marriage or are struggling. I appreciated the list of principles and Scripture verses listed in the back.

If you had asked me a few days ago who Tony and Lauren Dungy were I would have said I had no idea. When I picked up the book Uncommon Marriage from the library I thought to myself, "Self, it appears I should know who these people are but I haven't a clue." Then I read the back cover and realized Tony was the first African American head coach to win the Super Bowl and quickly realized why I had never heard of him. I don't do sports. LOL
I was thinking the book would be marriage advice and such but in actuallity it is the story of their married life with tons of football in it, which made it oh so boring for me. There were bits I enjoyed, like when Lauren was talking about issues with the kids but much was about how he coached and when they had to switch teams, ect. which didn't interest me in the least. I can tell these are very kind people though who have a passion for family and others and if you or your spouse are into football you would LOVE this book. So despite the fact that I was bored I know a lot of others wouldn't be so I still recommend it.
