I bought this book to teach my kids geography through our other curriculum. It is perfect for that. It explains what a student needs to know about geography and ideas on how to teach it through literature, history, and even science. It gives very specific helps and details like vocabulary and facts that a child should know from memory. It gives ideas for activities like an archeology dig with cookies that I will use this year as we study creation science, dinosaurs, and archeology. We used the tips on teaching geography with literature as we studied Ann of Green Gables by studying peninsulas and islands. We try to incorporate some conversations about geography during our studies of missionaries or children's books about other countries as well. We don't do everything every year since they remember connected facts so much better. I just pick a few things for my Elementary kids that they can learn along with the curriculum content we already planned first. Then, in middle school, I will thoroughly teach what they don't know after an assessment. We have had this since my son was in kindergarten and now he is in 2nd grade. Both my second grader and my first grader are comfortable using our children's atlas, using maps (like zoo and simple type), and directories. Road maps are still harder but they ENJOY trying on their own. If you don't read many books like us and use just workbooks for everything then you may find this hard to incorporate. But if you are like us and use a cycling world history program and read real books, it is easier to add a quick geography lesson than add extra worksheets. I don't find it takes very long and I don't have much time. I just skim through the book in the summer and add a few things in my lesson plans. I also keep some of the ideas in my head through the year and often find I actually add more in conversations and learning opportunities than I actually planned. That said, it is not for everyone. It is likely that the kids will learn better this way, but some teachers may have trouble teaching this way.

I heard so many good reviews, but it ended up on my book sale table along with the Trail Guide to World Geography book and CDrom. TUG has lots of info inside, and is laid out better than the rest of the series but is still not great. I feel it is overpriced for the value. You also need to purchase specific atlases only available through the company (as they are outof date and being substituted with another compatible version) Thankfully I already had a copy of my own.

When I had a question I called the company customer service. I was then informed that they do not answer questions, I muat buy the reccommended books and find the answer myself. Also the next time I call do not call the 1800# it is only for orders not support.

Q: Full credit for each subject?/ Novels This is our last year and he has more credits than he needs, but by law I have to include 1 more credit in Math, Science, English, and History. Will I have to supplement, or could I just use this? Also, what books would I need for the novel section?

A:

You should be able to get a full credit in each of those subjects but you may have to do some activities for younger grade levels to get the full credit.

The only novel required is "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates"
