Editorial Reviews

Donita K. Paul continues her fantasy series aimed at middle school readers where dragons and humans fight side by side in a battle against evil in their realms. (The first in the series, One Realm Beyond, was reviewed in the Christian Library Journal, January-February 2014.) In Two Renegade Realms, several years have passed since the attack by the corrupt Realm Walker Guild. Cantor D’Ahma and Bixby D’Mazeline have gone their own ways. During that time, Cantor has grown 15 inches in height while searching for his long-lost mentors. Meanwhile Bixby and Dukmee have been hunting for the lost Library of Lymes. The king and queen ask Cantor to find the ancient information needed by the realm. In doing so, he meets up with Bixby and Dukmee. Together, Cantor, Bixby, and Dukmee try to find the ancient Library of Lymes. They are also asked to rescue Chomountain (the legendary realm walker) from his imprisonment. Faced with the impending invasion, they must find a way to find the answers they need, both to rescue Chomountain and to fight against the intruders on the renegade realms. Though they fight valiantly, the war is not over yet. Middle school readers will enjoy this fantasy series with its excellent world-building, descriptive narrative, and endearing characters. The faith element is allegorical, and violence is appropriate where the battles take place. Readers will find themselves caught up in the antics of the dragon Bridger and his sister, as well as the idiosyncrasies of Chomountain. Recommended for public libraries and school collections. Fans of Donita Paul’s earlier series and fantasy fans will not be disappointed! Carol R. Gehringer, CLJ

I've been waiting to read "Two Renegade Realms" since I finished "One Realm Beyond!" Three years after the events of "One Realm Beyond," all of our favorite characters are reunited for an important mission. However, the legendary Chomountain isn't what they expected and the now rogue Realm Walkers will have to work together to avert a disastrous intersection of the realms.

With the time skip comes surprises such as Cantor's growth spurt, leaving him much taller than his peers. It leads to a lot of fun moments when he reunites with his old friends. Bixby, the daughter of royalty, is as bubbly and petite as ever. I spent half the book trying to figure out if the author is planning to romantically pair her with Cantor. They have a sweet friendship right now, along with several moments that feel like they're flirting with something more. It makes me wonder why Mrs. Paul created such a height difference between the two ... (I'm sure it's intentional). Scholarly Dukemee and Bridger, the slightly klutzy dragon, completes the entertaining ensemble cast. Ending on a slight cliffhanger (again), it'll be interesting to see how this trilogy close (I'm assuming the title will have a "three" in it somewhere). ;-)

As someone who has read a lot of fantasy novels, the absence of a character list/glossary and a map was very noticeable. I think the books could really benefit from their inclusion --especially if someone is jumping in mid-series or if it's been awhile since you read the first novel (like me).

While she often incorporates fantasy-type magic, there is always a creator or God-like figure that orders her fantasy worlds. Though listed as teen fiction, I'd recommend Donita K. Paul's books to upper elementary students and older that love clean fantasy. Her content practically always "all ages appropriate" (think of her as a grandmother telling a story).

[Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher through the BookLook Bloggers book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own.]

Better written than the first one.

Two Renegade Realms by Donita K. Paul is the second book in the Realm Walkers series. This second book was a better written and more enjoyable story than the first one. It wasn't as kiddish to me. I hated how it ended, though! I'm going to have to wait how long for the third book?! lol Joking aside, it did end pretty decently. It tied up everything from the story and only kept us hanging just enough to want the next one in the series. ;-)

It's been two years since the last book, and Cantor has been off on adventures ever since. With no success at finding Ahma and Odem, he feels inadequate and insecure in his realm walker role. Then he is sent on a mission to find Bixby and Dukmee. Once he locates them, he finds it slow going to save the world from the Lymen Invasion when multiple distractions and missions keep coming up. Will they be able to figure out the mysteries surrounding the invasion? And what about Ahma and Odem? Where have they been for the last three years?

Cantor is my favorite character in the book. There is more to him than meets the eye, and I can't wait to hear more about him in the next book. Cantor keeps trying to fight his attraction to Bixby because he fears it will distract him from the Lymen invasion. But poor Bixby is the one who gets hurt in the process. Bridger, the dragon, is as funny and silly as ever, but I do wish Cantor would accept him already! They've been together for three years! Isn't it time for the temper tantrum to be over now... lol Dukmee still irritates me because his brilliance makes him come off as arrogant and aloof.

Chomountain is an interesting addition to the story. He's a much more likable character compared to Dukmee, but I am confused by him. I think he's supposed to be kind of like an Elijah in the story, but I'm not sure. It wasn't explained well at all. Cantor, Bridger, and Bixby continue to be my favorite characters, and I can't wait to see how their story will come together in the end. Overall, it's a fun, enjoyable read. :-)

I was given this book free from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for an honest review.

"The violence that followed was hard to watch. The drawings Canton had made with the pens they found in the ruins should have prepared her, but she found the Lymen invaders hideous. The large green men hoisted themselves out of the plant-like pods they traveled in, then attached the vessels to their backs. Whether the bulk was lightweight or the Lymen were immensely strong, the ships did not encumber the Lymen one bit. The invaders stood on two legs with a vine tail they often used as a third arm. Their arms resembled huge leaves, the one edge had teeth, must like a saw, and they ripped through wood and people with ease."

Book: Two Renegade Realms - eBook by Donita K. Paul, Zondervan Publishers, 2014

    Genre: Fantasy

Target Audience: Boys and Girls 13+

    Subjects: Trust in God, Prayer

Summary: With the explosion, some of the enemies on the council are dead, but the leader of the movement to destroy the very people they are pledged to protect is still alive and has more plans for destruction. Thats not the most urgent of their troubles though. The most urgent is two planets that only come around every thousand years or so. And always cause trouble when they do. The biggest challenge is that they have developed vehicles to go between realms negating the needs for Premins Realm Walkers and Portrals. Those who live on these renegade planets are completely evil, willing to utterly destroy, gorging themselves on all in their path. They must be stopped before they can land their ships. Cantor, Bixby, their dragons, Dukmee and some new friends are Primens chosen warriors to stop the invasion. Thats assuming they can free all the imprisoned, convince the wilder dragons, heal the sick and inured, find the missing books and maps, interpret the puzzles left by the ancients

Notes: The second in the Realm Walkers series, Two Renegade Realms continues the story of the world with Primen representing the Ultimate Being, Primen Warriors as angel type figures, realm walkers as the ones supposed to protect and help the people and the council as the ones supposed to lead and guide the realm walkers in protecting the people. This story focuses on following Primen as best as you can with what He has given you. A right hand man, seeming to represent a prophet like Elijah is introduced in this story. He is given large amounts of information directly from Primen, but not all details. He is still expected to make decisions and live in the world without being omnipotent something that is frustrating to the others at various times. Overall, the spiritual element isnt so much one big issue as it is merely modeling characters who are walking closely with God who have devoted their entire lives to following God.

There is also the start of a development of Cantor trying to avoid dealing with his emotions. It is a thread not finished in this book, but he seems to be unwilling to get involved in a relationship, entangling his emotions.

Of note, there is one page where I would recommend younger readers skip. It gives a very horrific detailed description of the violence of the enemy from the renegade planets. Most of the book is light hearted even in the midst of trouble and difficulty, but page 361 contains too much detail of violence that doesnt fit with the rest of the authors writing style.

    Spiritual Content Recommendation Scale: 4/5
