Centered on "living books," this creative approach to history integrates elements of both Charlotte Mason and Classical methods.
Short, very informal introductions are written directly to the student and open up each topic with a distinctly Christian perspective. Suggestions for activities or writing exercises are often included as well. The booklists follow, with selected annotations on what pages or sections to read and appropriate grade levels for each entry. Incredibly flexible in nature, families can proceed at the pace that's best for their students as they select "spines," biographies, in-print books, and out-of-print classics from the extensive lists.
Proceeding chronologically, entries include lists for Mighty King Arthur, Augustine, Vikings, Alfred the Great, Robin Hood, Medieval towns, Marco Polo, Charles the Wise, and other relevant unit-study topics.
Grades 5-12; may be adapted for younger siblings. 146 pages, softcover, spiral-bound. Full resource list is included at the back of the book.

Although our oldest child will be entering grade 5 (recommended start age) there are so many excellent quality suggested resources for kindergarten and up that we will all be able to study together (three K-4 age children).
Each book we have purchased so far, will be kept in our family library and not sold off at curriculum sales!
Michelle Darling5 Stars Out Of 5June 30, 2010Michelle DarlingIf you are looking for an overview of the Middle Ages that goes beyond memorizing facts and focuses on 'cause and effect truths' this is it. It does not lay out daily lesson plans but rather gives wonderful insights and commentary paired with a list of the best of related books, audio etc. Great for the teacher that wants the freedom to decide how much time and what extra activites to do for each topic. The banks of the river are still there to guide you but how fast you sail and what 'boat you take' are still up to you. No buyer's remorse here that's for sure.
Laura5 Stars Out Of 5May 13, 2009LauraThe beauty of the Truthquest series is that it makes us aware of the wealth of excellent literature that was available in bygone eras, and encourages us to seek out the "ancient treaures." Library book sales are a great asset to this guide as so many libraries are discarding excellent books in favor of the politically correct.

Many of the books listed are out of print or unavailable from our local library or online.I was disappointed with the lack of up-to-date listings. I've had to use a "spine book" - A Child's History of the World by Hillyer and some historical fiction for most of our history reading.
