Publisher's Description

Ann-Margret Hovsepian dares girls 8 to 12 to transform their lives and world through active faith in these short devotions featuring specific daily challenges that put learned truth into life-altering action.

Truth and Dare is a devotional that transforms Scripture from something learned to something lived. Each daily devotion launches with short Scriptures and simple, relevant messages (truth). Girls explore godly truth about everything from standing up for others to guarding their speech. And each day, girls are challenged (dared) to live out their faith by undertaking specific tasks that foster spiritual growth.

Girls will delight in discovering how Scripture can become real in whole new ways as they learn to apply it with each day’s dare. And parents value the solid truth brought by Hovsepian, a respected author and speaker. It ideally suits anyone looking to inspire a young girl to boldly live out her faith.

Truth & Dare by Ann Margret Hovsepian (published by David C. Cook 2011) is a one year devotional for girls between the ages of 9 thru 12. This book hits the emerging preteen demographic with relevant topics and a pop-culture title that will attract their interest. The overall theme serves to connect girls with God and help establish a closer relationship with him. Not only do girls get to open this inviting devotional but they will want to have a Bible handy as well to look up the key scripture for the day. This decision to only include the scripture reference for each day is a great tool in training young women to find their way around the Bible. All 365 days cover topics that include foundational truths (Every Christian is One Special Part of a Body), living well (A Quick Temper Displeases God), sticky situations (Gossip can Destroy Lives), tough topics (Witchcraft is Seriously Dangerous Stuff), and sharing your faith (Jesus' Followers Should Lead Others to Him). What I enjoy about reading through the pages of this well laid out devotional is its appeal to every learning style. Those who are still developing their reading skills won't find this burdensome. Each day is laid out on one page beginning with a scripture to look up, a statement of truth, a 100-125 word of encouragement, and three challenges (dares) that girls can use to apply what they've read. A section is also left at the bottom of the page for journaling. This devotional allows each day for either a creative, active, interactive, or reflective response from the reader. Though Truth or Dare may initially seem daunting due to its 432 pages, it is broken down in manageable bites, laid out Monday thru Friday with the weekend laying out a different format containing "extra time" activities to keep things fresh. Girls can begin at the start of the year or jump into this anytime. The only thing missing from this book is a table of contents or a topical index at the back. This would allow for easier navigation if readers want to revisit topics that are of particular interest to them. What it does include on the back pages are an invitation to faith in Jesus and answers to the fun pages that the reader encounters on their way through the book. I am looking forward to recommending this publication to the parents of our preteen girls and making it available to them.

My daughter hungers for a deeper relationship with God, and this book has provided a mechanism for her to seek Him--on her own. And she loves the devotions.

This book has a great lay-out. At the beginning of each day's devotion, there is one verse for the girls to read. Then there's a short story or illustration to go with it. That's followed by a Dare: a way to apply the Truth to their thoughts that day and then a triple-dog dare that helps girls bring what they've learned down to their everyday lives. At the end of the page there's a short journaling session. The book reads like they're sitting down with a big sister or older friend, and gleaning from her faith and experience. My daughter (11) is doing this solely on her own and because she wants to. I love that!

We've looked at devotions for the Tween boys and now here's one for the girls and reading through it , If I had been between the ages of 9-13yrs and gotten this devotional guide for my Birthday or Christmas as a gift, I would have been in devotional heaven as I flipped through it and read some of the daily devotions , it was just that awesome. Each Day , the devotions have a Title e.g The Exterminator , a section of the bible to read e.g Psalm 32 1v5 , a Truth - "Trying to hide your sins from God leads to worse problems and with that comes a 4 short paragraphs devotional message and a Dare - Confess your sins to God .... right away :). For those girls who want a bit more of a challenge and think that they are up for it - Truth and Dare contains what is known as a Triple Dog Dare ( the idea taken from the Boy's devotional) with three dares each day to step onto the plate and achieve - The Triple Dog Dare. 1) Whenever you feel tempted to hide a sin , ask God to give you the courage to be honest about it and make things right , 2) Play hide and seek with your friends and share today's verse about not hiding your sins from God and 3) Have you lied to your parents today, ask for forgiveness and at the end of it as Girls love to write , their is a part to journal your achievements- How did it go and What did you learn ? . Also throughout the book for those girls who have a bit extra time on their hands is activity pages.

The perfect devotional guide made especially for Tween Girls aged 9-13yrs.

Truth and Dare, by Ann-Margret Hovsepian, is a fantastic, dynamic, one-year devotional for nine to twelve-year-old girls! Ann-Margret inspires, encourages, speaks truth, and dares girls to shine their light for Jesus at home and anywhere they happen to be. She challenges them to change where change is needed.

The devotional is filled with personal stories, puzzles, games, and triple-dog dares. It starts with a specific title, followed by Truth, God's Word. There's a section for ‘Got More Time?' and journaling space to identify and apply what God has taught them during their devotional. Ann-Margret tackles the easy, light aspects of a girl's life such as love, joy, thankfulness, etc., as well as the tougher subjects she will encounter as she matures, such as a deep faith in God and Jesus, prayer, forgiveness, dealing with family members, friendships, modesty, dating, sex, marriage, and even marital infidelity.

The devotional is set up for daily Monday through Friday separate devotions, and then a separate weekend edition. The variety of subjects and activities breaks the boredom of a regular devotional. The cover is absolutely gorgeous, girl-oriented, and relevant for today!

Girls need all the help they can get to grow up into Christ-centered women. I would love to see mother/daughter sharing as much as possible to bridge their relationship, giving an opportunity for prayer time for important issues.

Things in a girl's life change so much during this age period, and it's great to see someone tackle the issues and challenge them to live a Godly life.

As innovative and practical as this devotional is, I would love to see a new one year after year, even for the different age groups! Would have loved one for myself when I was this age.

This book was provided by Audra Jennings of The B&B Media Group, Inc., in exchange for my honest review. No monetary compensation was received.

    Great Devotional for Tween Girls

I have a granddaughter who will be nine next year and when I saw this book I wanted to see if it would be something she could get into. So I sent my request and The B & B Media Group, Inc sent me this review copy.

Truth & Dare is written for tween girls. When I first looked at it and started reading through it I thought to myself, this is a book my granddaughter would like.

Each day starts off with a bible verse, a "Truth" and a "Dare." Then there's a place for a girl to write her thoughts down on what she has learned. What a wonderful way to encourage young girls to journal.

For the weekend there is a small "quiz" that helps them remember what they learned throughout the week and a "Got More Time?" section that suggests other things they can do.

The only drawback I see about this book is the size. It may be a bit intimidating for a young tween. Though it's packed with many wonderful things, just the thickness of the book may cause them to be hesitant to start reading it. (Not everyone is a bookworm like me or my granddaughter.)

But other than that, it's a wonderful devotional and I believe the girls it's targeted for will get a lot out of it.
