Army MomAge: 45-54Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5March 28, 2014Army MomAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 4Trinity is the first book in Ronie Kendig's new series A Breed Apart.
Heath Daniels and his war dog Trinity have seen a lot of action until an ambush puts them out of commission. Suffering from PTSD and blackouts, Heath wonders if his life now will be anything more than speaking gig's. At least he has his girl Trinity, but when he meets the beautiful young woman who Trinity approves of, he knows that he needs to get to know her better.
Darci Kentz is too involved with her career to become romantically involved with anyone, but when she spots Heath working out with Trinity and locks eyes with his stormy grey ones she knows she is in trouble. When she gets kidnapped by rogue Chinese, Heath and Trinity along with one of the best military teams are sent to rescue her.
I have to admit, it took me the first third of the book to get my bearing with this story. We had Americans, Russians, and Chinese, so for me there were too many characters and honestly, I don't do well with non-English names. It's hard to keep the characters straight, who's who, and who's on which side. It just takes a more effort to keep everything straight and then it's not fun to read anymore.
I also found there was too much repetition of Heath's injury and illness and I found that use of the word "whore" was not in any way necessary. It didn't add anything to the dialogue. I read Christian fiction so I don't have to deal with these types of words. I am really upset that the author and the publishing company think that this is okay.
On the up side, I absolutely loved Trinity. I'm a dog lover so she endeared herself to me from the very first page. The way she communicated was so much fun to read about. For me, she made the book. I also loved all the research that went into military dogs and their handlers. It made for a fascinating plot.
Darci and Heath really pulled it together in the last half of the book. I really felt them come together, both romantically and as a team.
If you love military action books than I think that you will like this one. But I do have to give this book only 3.5 out of 5 stars because of character confusion.
debhgrtyPlymouth MAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5You Will Love Trinity!March 4, 2014debhgrtyPlymouth MAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Ronie is a FaceBook friend, and I've avidly read everything she's ever written and published. Like many others, I was sorry to see the "Discarded Heroes" series end, but her new three-book series about military war dogs and their handlers is equally captivating. The first in the series, Trinity, released in September (http://tinyurl.com/9yu295t). The second, Talon, will release in May of 2013, and the third, Beowulf, probably in October of 2013.
I just finished Trinity. As with all of her other books, there are engaging characters, a bit of romance, lots of excitement, intrigue, and suspense. I really "hated" the book - it so enraptured me I had to keep putting it down to keep from racing through it in one sitting. Trinity and her handler, Heath Daniels, are the central characters in the book, along with Darci Kintz, a military intelligence officer. Set in Afghanistan, there's involvement with the Chinese, Russians, a couple of blinding snow storms, mountains, tunnels, and lots and lots of action. You will love Trinity! I will have a hard time waiting for the next two to release!
Ronie usually has her characters in mind before she has the locale or plot. "Some [characters] are easier to write than others. She laughingly said one of her characters from Firethorn (http://tinyurl.com/9ptu54f) told her three different stories before he told her the true one. Then he told her she could write whatever she wanted as long as she "stayed out of my business." Ronie said on FaceBook recently that when writing the point of view for a villain in one of the new books, she had to keep herself bathed in prayer in order to complete the POV.
Ronie is writing her new series about military war dogs (MWDs) because many people are not aware of them and the important role they play. She was happy about the publicity on the Navy SEAL mission to get Bin Laden because the MWDs were an important part. She's been researching the subject for two years and says this series has a different rhythm than the last and shows a new aspect of the military. Writing for her is like a journey; "kind of like getting to know a new friend."
She's an animal lover and feels everyone loves (or should love) animals. Dogs are famously loyal, but war dogs "take it one step further - they are to protect their handlers and will die to do so if required.
Ronie is a military brat - her dad is in the army. Her husband was, too, until he blew out his knee and had to retire. His dad is army, too. Ronie and her husband met at Ft. Hood.
I asked her what her readers don't know about her - she said, "I really don't know. I'm pretty chatty." Then she related that her mom was born in England, then moved to Ireland. Mom was very strict, prim, and proper: she raised Ronie to be that way, too! She loves to paint, decorate, and remodel, but is notorious for starting projects that she says will take two weeks, but end up taking two months.
If you've not read Ronie's work, you'll want to collect them all. I guarantee excellent reads!
Wman4JCmiami, flAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Love Trinity and Her Story!!November 7, 2013Wman4JCmiami, flAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4Wow, this is the kind of book that will make you appreciate military war dogs and their handlers whether you're prepared for it or not! Candace Calvert endorsed this book and this is what she had to say, "Dodge bullets, cling by your fingerprints to an icy cliff--then fall heart first for a wounded hero and his incredible military war dog. You won't sleep, but please remember to breathe." I think Candace PERFECTLY describes what every reader will experience with this book, I made sure to remember to breathe many times while reading this :)
The story becomes so real, I even hunched down every time gunfire came upon the good guys! I actually got tired of the gunshots because it was wearisome for me to see that constant danger for the good guys, but that goes to show how GOOD the writing is :) I couldn't believe anyone would fire at a dog, but that is part of war and one of the many reasons why war is horrible.
There is one torture scene in the story, but it's not graphic at all and the person getting beaten is unconscious for most of it. I couldn't believe her high threshold for pain....shot, kicked, threatened, slapped, punched, electrocuted, and THEN getting through a snow storm and getting caught in an avalanche. My nickname for her was either Mrs. Incredible or Supergirl considering that this brutal environment is what compelled her to believe in God and ultimately gives her the freedom she missed out on while being a spy. She reminded me slightly of Sydney from Alias because she didn't mind getting beat up, but the thought of innocent people being injured or killed on her behalf is what scared her/angered her/pushed her to survive.
My favorite parts of this book were:
Trinity....WOW, what an AMAZING dog!! And we're NOT allowed to pet her?! Loved this canine fiercely and whenever she was in danger, I was HOOKED to the story to see what happened next.
The scene where Trinity, Talon and Beowulf and their handlers all meet one another....WHAT a GREAT scene! Also utterly enjoyed how A Breed Apart team backed up Heath/Ghost, the humans.
Lastly, I loved how Exodus 14:14 was illustrated for Heath after the rescue takes place. That was very precious to me how he learned to let go and trust God and it was exhilarating for him to get this revelation. The author has signed this scripture many times on books I've won from her and it was deeply appreciated how she wrote this scene in :)
God bless military war dogs/their handlers and God bless the author for giving them a voice!
