Author/Artist Review

Author: David McIlroy
Located in: UK
Submitted: December 13, 2010

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a barrister (trial attorney) in the UK with a specialist interest in the theology of law. I seek to inspire Christian lawyers to understand their profession as a calling from God, in all its joys, struggles and limitations.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to explore whether the Christian understanding of God makes any difference to how Christians think about law and, if so, how.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I hope people will get some idea of the main approaches Christian thinkers have had to the doctrine of the Trinity and to the theology of law, and will see the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  This was my PhD. thesis. I learned a lot about research and about how to do Christian theology. I deepened the insights from my first book "A Biblical View of Law and Justice".

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I grew up reading C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. My theology has been influenced by their vision and by the thinking of Aquinas, Calvin, Kuyper and Gunton. I am stimulated by the music of bands such as U2 and Delirious.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I teach a course in the theology of law at Spurgeon's College. I also wrote "A Biblical View of Law and Justice" and a chapter in Spencer and Chaplin (eds). "God and Government".
