"Transforming Prayer: How Everything Changes When You Seek God's Face" by Daniel Henderson is a non-fiction book that discusses why prayer should be more than what we as Christians have made it and how we can go from an ordinary prayer life to one that is extraordinary.

The author starts with a personal testimony of how he came to see that his prayer life was far from what it should be. He spends several chapters giving thoughts on what prayer has become in the modern church and on what it really needs to be. Rather than making requests of God from a long ‘grocery' list, the author feels prayer should be a time of communion and fellowship with God, where we worship and praise Him and seek His face.

I was personally convicted while reading this book, because I know my prayer time is not what it should be. It also reminded me of another book that I read several years ago (I can't even remember the title of it) that showed how to pray directly from the Bible. I really enjoy doing that, and I try to do that when I can.

Most of this book is spent describing the ‘why' instead of the ‘how,' but if you stick with it, you will get to the ‘how' towards the end. Chapters 14 and 15 are very helpful chapters on how to best go about changing your prayer life, as are the Appendices. There are discussion questions for each chapter at the back of the book, which would be very good to use in a small group setting.

Overall, I think this book is a good tool for those who truly want to grow and change in the area of prayer.

I was given the opportunity to review this book for free from the Publisher 'Bethany House'. When they asked I was excited, due to the fact that I knew my prayer life could always improve. I have always prayed, but after reading this book, I learned that many times I was seeking Gods hand and not his face. Yet I could recall different times when I was seeking and finding his face. This was both encouraging and sad at the same time.

I will admit that reviewing this book was much harder than I expected, due to the fact that my heart wanted to read it and apply every concept, yet my mind was telling me that I needed to be practical and read it as a reviewer. Since we are all at different places in our walk, and at different levels of our prayer life. So I guess I will tell you what my heart and my mind felt for this book.

My heart loved it, I am encouraged to change my prayer times to seek more of his face, rather than his hand. What Mr. Herderson means when he says this, is that many times when we pray, we seek what we want (our wish list) while many of these are needs / wants that God is more than happy to provide for us, we are not seeking a relationship; which is really what God wants from us. If we model our prayer life after scripture and encompass scripture as our guide to our prayers. Then our prayer times change from an impersonal time to a conversation time. God speaks to us through his word and we praise him through our words.

Mr. Hernderson writes in a style that any level can read ( I would recommend any age from early teen to those of us more 'mature') I believe that we all can gain from reading this book. Some of my favorite things, is the fact that Mr. Henderson tells stories on how changes in his prayer life has changed his life in different areas. I like the fact that it is not all about him, Mr. Henderson uses quotes and references to other writers to get their perspective on different aspects of prayer. However, I will admit the part that I looked forward to the most was at the end of each chapter, there was a short (1-2 page)real example of someone who allowed Mr. Hendersons teaching to change their prayer life..

And now how did my mind like the book...It too really enjoyed reading it, it was an easy read, that I looked forward to doing each day,(I only read one chapter each day), I enjoyed the stories and could relate with the context. I do wish Mr. Henderson would have give more insight on these prayer events. Mr. Henderson and many others in the book talked about them, but for someone who has never attended an event like this, the concept of 72 hour events with strictly prayer is foreign. Although I am interested and would have loved to know more about them.

In conclusion, to me the best way to rate a book is to ask yourself, "Who I give this book to a friend with my blessing to read it?" And my answer was YES!!!! I actually gave this to my best friend and brother in Christ to read yesterday, with the request that he too passes it on. I feel that this book with transform your prayer life, and I believe that if we have a more intimate time in prayer with our Heavenly Father, not only will we be blessed, but we will be in tune with his plan, not ours.

Transforming Prayer by Daniel Henderson is a must read for anyone looking to revolutionize their prayer life. Henderson is a senior pastor and has been putting on worship prayer conferences around the country for years Now he takes the wisdom he has learned from these workshops and his own study and puts it in this book to help readers develop their own prayer life. The book is filled with testimonials from several people who have attended the conferences and have had their lives, both prayer life and whole life, transformed. Henderson uses Scripture and Jesus' own instructions in the Lord's Prayer to get to the nitty-gritty of prayer. He convicts readers (me included) of often praying a "grocery list" of prayers, just checking off a list and using prayer to seek God's hand to fix things for us, rather than seeking His face, which should be the true focus of prayer. He offers a four-step guide to prayer using a music conductor as a guide. Here are some terrific quotes from the book: We attempt to use prayer to get our will done in heaven rather than His will done on earth. Asking [in prayer] is the doorway...to discovering the profound joy of a transformed life. What motivates us to ask can often be all over the map. What motivates our Father to answer is that He would be glorified in our prayers through the person and work of His Son, Jesus Christ. This is an excellent book for anyone looking to transform their prayer life by seeking His face, and not His hand.

Transforming Prayer is an excellent book on developing your prayer life in a way that will awaken your heart and clarify a path to a new level of spiritual intimacy and transformation. This book is well written, easy to read and it will help you to overcome common barriers to praying effectively. Rather than presenting God with our long list of needs, requests, and wants, you will learn that "worship" based prayer is focusing on giving God honor and reverence and focusing of who He is and what His character is.

Prayer. . . .depending on God.

Prayerlessness. . . .our declaration of independence from God

God wants great things for His children, we usually settle for the good things. Everything pales in comparison to God wanting to reveal Himself to each of us. Seek His face in prayer, depend on God and be prepared to be blessed and changed by your encounter with God

"Take your prayer life from ordinary to extraordinary." That is what the book Transforming Prayer is all about. Daniel Henderson focuses on a very vital part of the Christian life: prayer. In this book he helps the reader understand the difference between praying a list and praying a worship-based prayer. Henderson shows you how to: "Overcome common barriers to praying effectively, awaken your prayer life with simple, biblical patterns of prayer, [and] enjoy Spirit-led prayer sparked by Scripture passages." In other words, the reader is shown how to seek God's face rather than His hand. This is a very practical book for any Christian to read, especially new believers. Henderson writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. He helps the reader realize how rewarding a Christian's prayer life can be by giving Biblical guidance and a practical plan for taking their prayer life from "ordinary to extraordinary." While praying worship-based prayers is not new to me, there are many people who do not understand. This is a great tool to offer to Christians who are struggling in their prayer life. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
