Publisher's Description

No one can deny that our culture is opposed to Christian values, and the influences bombarding our children’s moral development can be deadly. But few parents and church leaders realize how critical it is to start developing a child’s biblical worldview from the very earliest years of life. The problem is complex: parents who themselves did not receive early spiritual training leave their children’s training to the church. Yet the church often focuses on older children—not realizing that a child’s moral development is set by the age of nine. The answer is for churches to recognize the need to come alongside parents to provide them biblical worldview training, parenting information, counseling, etc., that will equip them to help their children become the spiritually matuare Church of tomorrow. Profiles presented of churches who are effectively ministering to children and winning the war our enemy is waging against them\.   Research orientated books on childhood spiritual development. Raising Heaven Bound Kids in a Hell Bent World by Eastman Curtis / What Your Kids Need to Know About God and When by John Trent / Introducing the Spiritual Side of Parenting by Ron Clarkson / Bringing Up Boys by James Dobson.

I read Transforming Children Into Spiritual Champions: Why Children Should Be Your Church's #1 Priority for one of my summer classes at CIU. The 145-page book was written almost eight years ago by George Barna, founder of America's leading marketing research firm focused on faith and culture. He says that most American churches fail to see that a child's moral development is set before they reach the age of ten. Churches need to place more of an emphasis on ministering to children or the energies placed on youth ministry needs to be (more) gospel-centered. Churches need to work with parents and help equip them to teach children a biblical worldview.

Although I do not find Barna's book to be a gripping read, I do applaud his efforts to remind us the importance of teaching young people the ways of the Lord. Many statistics are found throughout the eight chapters; however, more Scripture to support his claims would make this book much more powerful. Almost no Bible verses are found in the first two chapters - The State of American Children and The Spiritual Health of Our Children. The latter chapters do improve in this area as well as providing us ideas to help us produce spiritually mature children.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

I highly recommend this book for church leaders and parents. It is an excellent encouragement and resource. It has been a great help in my personal life as well as my work with the youth and children in my church. There are other resources that go along with this book that are also great. The book is easy to read and understand.Thank you regal for the review copy.

I was excited to order this book, and even more excited when I read it. I had found it hard to explain to my husband what I wanted for our children. This book had it all in black and white. I am so glad others share my thoughts!

LOVED this book. It is heavy on the numbers, as one reviewer said, but the numbers tell the story. This opened my eyes to the necessity of a healthy children's ministry to the present and future church. Prepare to be convicted!

Barna provides here a good, concise case for top-notch children's ministry. The information really isn't new to anyone who has read and studied on the subject. The greatest strength of this title is the gathering together of spiritual, statistical and sociological information into one small volume. This book should be on every pastor's shelf, and would be a great help to anyone teaching children or working in a children's ministry.I recommend it highly.
