Product Description

Back in fifth grade, Micah Knight got an Amish pen pal, and over the years, they've exchanged many letters--and many secrets. At age seventeen, Micah finally has the chance to meet her pen pal face-to-face. The only problem is that because of confusion about her name when the pen pals were assigned, her pen pal was a boy, Zack Miller. And all this time, Micah's never told Zack that she's actually a girl! While she wants nothing more than to experience life on Zack's Amish farm, she's afraid he'll hate her for deceiving him all these years. But she makes up her mind to face the music--and that's where the fun really begins.

This review was written for Trading Secrets - eBook.
What's in a name is a quote from Shakespear's Rome and Juliet. But it also is a very appropriate question that applies to Melody Carlson's Trading Secrets. The name is Micah. Obviously a boy's name, right? Wrong. And thus begins Trading Secrets. The name mixup is about to come full circle when Micah Knight has the opportunity to meet Zach Miller, the Amish boy that she's been pen pals with for the last five years. The only problem is that Zach believes his pen pal is a boy. So, when Micah has the opportunity to meet her pen pal face-to-face, and spend a few days helping out on his family's farm, her secret is finally out. This causes some interesting events to occur, most of which will have you smiling or laughing. And once you think you've got the story figured out, the author throws in a curve ball that has you asking, "Is Micah the only one that has a secret?"

Melody Carlson is a new author for me, but I can definitely say that after having read Trading Secrets, it won't be the last of her books that I read.

I really enjoyed this young adult novel. There is a nice mixture of Amish and "English" culture discussed in the book and the straightforward, first-person perspective that is used helped me feel as if I was really in the mind of the teenage girl, Micah. I know that first-person dialogue is a fairly popular way of writing young adult novels.

I enjoyed watching Micah try to fit in with Zach's Amish family. It was refreshing to hear about what she liked and disliked. And Micah was not treated the same way by everyone in the family. Some were unhappy to have her visit, and others were very welcoming. It felt authentic to me.

I think that Micah presents a good role model for girls reading this story. She became frustrated at the way she was being treated by some of the Amish community, however, she controlled her temper and did not say anything unkind or sarcastic toward those who gave her grief.

The storyline is interesting and the author does a good job of portraying Micah and Zach as the older teenagers that they are. They don't always make the right decisions, but they are trying to do so and they are attempting to find out where they both belong in the world. This was a very enjoyable story. And on another note...my fourteen year old daughter borrowed this book from me before I even had a chance to read it and she absolutely loved it!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell, through The Book Club Network, in exchange for an honest review.

    Trading Secrets**** by Melody Carlson

Micah Knight has been pen pals with Zach Miller, who is Amish, for 6 years. During that time they have become close friends, sharing their day to day lives and often their dreams. One thing Micah has not shared with Zach however is that she is a girl not a boy as her name suggests. She had always planned to tell him but as the years passed it became more difficult to find the courage to tell him. Now, she is going to actually meet Zach at his home and even help out on the farm. But what will Zach's response be when he sees her and learns that he is really a she? What will his family say? Zach and his family are shocked, to put it mildly and angry as well. Will they forgive her for her unplanned deception once she explains what happened? Can Zach and Micah's friendship survive? As the story unfolds, Micah learns a secret dream that Zach has not shared with anyone. Can she help him with his dream or will it go unfulfilled?

This is a fun young adult story that adults will enjoy as well. Friendships are important as are honesty, there are consequences of our actions (good or bad) and forgiveness which is clearly shown in the characters lives.

This is a light story geared toward young teenagers, but a great read for anyone. The story is centered on the lives of two teenagers, from two very different environments and how they are joined together. The young reader will be able to identify with both Zach and Micah and the feelings and frustrations they experience as they discover that grown up decisions can have grown up consequences that can be hard to take responsibility for. Zach is living on his familys Old Order Amish farm, so all the readers that love the Amish genre will delight in this story as well. It is fun to read about how these two lives have been intertwined over the years and how they help and support each other even when their lives are so different from each other. The love and support of family is so important in a young childs life, but the love and trust of a good friend can be just as important. Friendship, faith, and family all three can help to grow a child to adulthood.

This is the first book I have read by Melody Carlson. I really enjoyed it. Carlson is great at showing the contrasts between the English lifestyle and the Amish lifestyle. Often mentioning things I would have never thought about. It was also interesting to read a story about a teenage girls point of view. I enjoyed reading about relationships through a teenagers perspective. And it made me think more about what it would feel like to be Amish and yearn for something more. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Fiction.

Micah Knight has been writing to an Amish pen pal for years. When Zach Miller started writing Micah he assumed that she was a boy. The name Micah isnt known as a girls name, and Micah isnt your average girl. When Zach shares his secrets with her, Micah feels its too late to correct him. Micah would love nothing more than to finally see Zach face-to-face. Amish dont take pictures, and a boy would never ask another boy what he looks like. When a chance arises for Micah to visit his farm she cant turn it down. How will Zach react when he finds out she is not a boy? Will Micah lose one of her best friends? I would love to read another book with these characters in it!

I received a copy of this book from Revell and TBCN in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
