This is the first book I have read by Melody Carlson. I really enjoyed it. Carlson is great at showing the contrasts between the English lifestyle and the Amish lifestyle. Often mentioning things I would have never thought about. It was also interesting to read a story about a teenage girls point of view. I enjoyed reading about relationships through a teenagers perspective. And it made me think more about what it would feel like to be Amish and yearn for something more. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Fiction.

Micah Knight has been writing to an Amish pen pal for years. When Zach Miller started writing Micah he assumed that she was a boy. The name Micah isnt known as a girls name, and Micah isnt your average girl. When Zach shares his secrets with her, Micah feels its too late to correct him. Micah would love nothing more than to finally see Zach face-to-face. Amish dont take pictures, and a boy would never ask another boy what he looks like. When a chance arises for Micah to visit his farm she cant turn it down. How will Zach react when he finds out she is not a boy? Will Micah lose one of her best friends? I would love to read another book with these characters in it!

I received a copy of this book from Revell and TBCN in exchange for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.

Such a fun and enjoyable story that is a bit different from the typical Amish novel. Having an Amish pen pal for six years is not very common considering they started writing each other when they were in fifth grade. What is especially surprising is that Zach thinks his pen pal is a boy.

This all comes to a head when Micah decides that she wants to meet Zach in person.

Not only does Micah get a lesson in honesty but she also learns first hand what it's like to do farm work on an Amish farm.

The author weaves a tale that will make you realize how important friendship is and that forgiveness is not always easy, but necessary.

This is a great story for teens and adults alike.

"I feel worried for Zachs sake. His concern about the cost of something as minor as takeout is a reminder of his situation. He has nothing. No clothes to speak of. No money. No education. How in the world can he possibly make it in the English world?"

Book: Trading Secrets by Melody Carlson, Revell Publishers, 2014

    Genre: Realistic/Amish fiction

    Target Audience: Girls 13-19

Subjects: Amish lifestyle, Friendships, Dating relationships, Future/Career Decisions

Summary: Spring break should be amazing or horrifying. It depends on how her pen pal of six years takes the news that his pen pal isnt a boy, but rather, a girl. Back in fifth grade, pen pals were assigned an Amish school with an English school. The trouble is that the Amish teacher, believing photographs to be sinful, removed all the pictures. And Micahs name is one normally used for boys, not girls. So for six years theyve been writing. Theyve gone through tough times together, encouraged and supported each other. And now its time for Micah to reveal her secret. But Zach has been keeping a secret too. His secret is that he has lost his desire to be Amish. He has a thirst for knowledge, particularly mechanics and veterinary care. Its easier to keep secrets when your only interaction with one another is letters, but the time for meeting has finally come and all secrets are about to be revealed.

Notes: Trading Secrets is another of Melody Carlsons youth fiction books exploring what would happen if an Amish and an Englisher entered each others worlds. The first half of this book shows an English girl entering the world of an Amish boy. The second half shows the Amish boy entering the world of the English girl. As usual, a large focus is put on the culture differences, focusing on the beauty of the simplicity and living close to the land that the Amish have and the beauty of the freedom to be who God made you to be that the English have. The spiritual focus is on the characters choosing to turn to God in prayer when they become totally unsure of what else to do.

Trading Secrets by Melody Carlson is a fun book for teens who enjoy Amish Fiction. Micah Knight is a teenager who has had a pen pal named Zach Miller. After corresponding for six years it is time for them to meet face to face so Micah invited him to spend Spring break with her and her father in Cleveland. There is only one hitch and it is a big one; he thinks Micah is a boy. She is going to break the news to him during his visit to her but Zach's father asked Zach to invite Micah to their farm to help with the spring planting. Now Micah wishes she had told him the truth when they began writing but she didn't want to lose his friendship.

Traveling to the Miler farm disguised as a boy was not easy and when she is found out, she is embarrassed to no end. She plans to leave more than once, only to turn back like a bad penny to spend yet another day under the Miller's roof and feeling less than welcome. Micah develops strong character as she matures during this long hard week. Although written for the teen category, I heartily recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good story set in Amish country.

The thorny attitude of the Heroines BBF is grating-but the character becomes more likeable, later, so alls not lost.

The book is about now older pen pals since Fifth Grade meeting, for the first time. The interest and writing style get better as you progress through the story.

The writing style is not smooth enough to say syncopated- and is saved by an interesting plot.

Not sure I would have made all the same choices as the characters, but the mental debate opened by one of the secondary plots is worth visiting. The cultural contrasts are jarring, and subtly touch on the issues of migrating people .

A good book for those considering a move to a new place, or those about to transition.

    The journey raises good questions.
