Many books have been written concerning marriage. However, not many have approached a discussion of a theology of marriage. In Toward a Biblical Theology of Marriage, pastor Ernest D. Martin attempts to begin to fill this gap.
The world is presently confused and filled with debate of whether the Bible can provide a relevant message for marriage. From the conviction that the Bible is in fact relevant and essential for a complete understanding of marriage, Martin observes this very topic through the lens of various biblical passages. By focusing on what the biblical vocabulary of marriage may reveal of the Creator-Redeemer's intent for marriage, Martin develops a Christological paradigm for marriage that is consistent and applicable. A basic understanding of Greek and Hebrew will be preferable in order to fully understand the nuances of the Greek and Hebrew as the author explains his exegetical findings, but any reader seriously concerned with what the Bible says about marriage will be able to glean the larger truths.
Pastors, teachers, and counselors will find biblical faith perspectives useful in responding to the challenges and opportunities they face in the several phases of marital relationships.

Ernest D. Martin has given us a timely treatise on the current state of marriage and sexuality in this country. With the mind of a scholar and the heart of a pastor he avoids the shrillness that often accompanies this subject. His in-depth review of the Scriptures deserves a fair review. Some people may find the book a bit difficult to read, but the author is to be commended for keeping the discussion at an elevated level.

I wholeheartedly recommend Ernest D. Martin's Toward a Biblical Theology of Marriage as a sound work in biblical studies and as an invaluable resource. It will prove to be very helpful for all students and teachers of the Bible who have a heart for God's intentions with marriage and wish to read God's Word and listen to it in depth once again. We are given profound insights regarding the idea of marriage as we follow its trails in the Bible.
