One of the best books to ever read and give as a gift. Mr. Kendall writes with words that truly challenge our emotions and thinking. I have given this to so many people and their comments continue to be the same about how they find a new perspective on the word "forgiveness". This book helps to open our eyes and hopefully our hearts to healing. I think many pastors should recommend this book to their congregations.
I ordered this material for the Spring Quarter of our Marriage Enrichment study group of 50 adults. From the beginning of the study it has become apparent to participants that this is not a shallow or hastily written treatment of a much needed subject. The personal experience of the author in his experience with "total forgiveness" inspires each participant to face the fact that Christians need a defining look at what total forgiveness is and isn't.
Sadly the subject of forgiveness is often presented in a limited way to mean that we just say, "I am sorry"- "forgive me"-"get over it". However, Total Forgiveness explores this primary Biblical truth in such a way that almost immediately you are challenged to think about what you have been taught about forgiveness, and how much have you really given and received total forgiveness. It will disturb one's knowledge, understanding, and experience of our Lord's teaching on this valuable dimension of our spiritual growth.
Our small group discussions around the textbook and each person's personal journal entries in the study guide are leading all of us to a deeper reality of what God's love, the cross, and freedom from the bondage of unforgiveness is all about. Whatever format you may choose to use this material, in a group or personal, you will not regret it's impact on your life.
If you've been hurt or wronged, and are struggling with finding a way to get it right in your own mind and heart, this book will help you, in my opinion. It's well written, and I believe that it explains what God expects from each of his children... there's really nothing harder than to forgive the people who've wronged you - except finding a way to ask God to bless them! But with this book, I'm working on it. And I'm quite thankful that I found something to help me.
Forgiveness is at the heart of our Christian teaching, and this book explains why it is such an important message. Most of us have perhaps encountered someone that they found difficult to forgive, giving this book a universal appeal. It is truly dying to self to forgive an abuser or someone that has deeply hurt us, but that is what God is asking us to do.
