Everything's going to work out. Time away always makes things better . . .
That's what FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon believes as she boards a cruise to Alaska. A land of mountains and gems and minerals, the Last Frontier is a dream destination for this forensic geologist who's hoping to leave behind a hectic work schedule and an engagement drained of romance.
But when a passenger goes missing and winds up dead, Raleigh's vacation suddenly gets lost at sea. The ship's security chief tries to rule the death a suicide, but Raleigh's forensics background points to a much darker conclusion: Somewhere onboard, a ruthless murderer walks free.
Engulfed by one of her toughest cases yet, Raleigh requests assistance from the FBI and receives her nemesishandsome Special Agent Jack Stephanson. As the cruise ship sails through the Inside Passage, Raleigh has five days to solve a high-profile murder, provide consultation for a movie filming onboard, and figure out her increasingly complicated feelings for Jackwho might not be as arrogant as she originally thought.
And that's only her work life. Family offers even more challenges. Joined on the cruise by her mother and aunt, Raleigh watches helplessly as disturbing rifts splinter her family.
Like the scenery that surrounds the cruise ship, Raleigh discovers a mystery so daunting that even the mountains might bow down before it.

MichellMetro Manila, PhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5July 8, 2011MichellMetro Manila, PhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I have featured The Mountains Bow Down (A Raleigh Harmon Novel) by Sibella Giorello in my previous post before. After reading the summary, I was quite excited to finally receive this book and read it.
Raleigh Harmon is an FBI Special Agent and forensic geologist who is off on a cruise to Alaska. Acting as a consultant for a movie being filmed on board, she hopes to have time to explore the beauties of the mountains of Alaska. She is joined on this cruise by her mother, who has a mental condition, and her aunt who is a specialist in crystals. She also saw this cruise as a time to get away from her fiancee.
Little did she know that even on this fantastic Alaskan cruise, her skills as a forensic geologist will be put to use. The wife of the movie actor that she is consulting for dies on the cruise. The ship's chief of security is quick to rule it a suicide, but she believes it's a murder. Not wanting to let a murderer go free, her planned vacation has now turned to work for her.
Sibella Giorello writes beautifully. She has a gift for writing beautiful descriptions of the scenic places in Alaska that feels like you are actually experiencing it yourself. Her character, Raleigh Harmon, is highly skilled in her profession as an FBI agent but she is made real with her struggles with her family, her fiancee and the other FBI agent who was sent to assist her. I feel that I really got to know this character very well.
I also liked the way she developed the mystery in this book. It was very interesting to follow every clue with Raleigh. This book has components of mystery, thriller, love story and the complications of family relationships that makes this a worthwhile read.
There are only a couple of things that I was disappointed with. I felt that the ending was just too complicated and came at me so fast. I mean, after slowly solving the mystery through the book and following it with excitement, suddenly there was this ending that had such a complicated story with it.
The other thing that I found to be a negative was the way the Filipino crew on the ship was portrayed. Being a Filipino myself, I find it hard to believe that Filipinos on cruise ships answer in one-word English as was portrayed in the book. Although, she was ably assisted by a Filipino-American bartender towards the end of the story, this FilAm bartender says that he is American, not Filipino.
The Mountains Bow Down is her 3rd book in A Raleigh Harmon novel. Check out other reviews in this Litfuse Blog Tour.

SkyGirlOntarioGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5This book kept me on the end of my seat.April 26, 2011SkyGirlOntarioGender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5FBI Special Agent Raleigh Harmon needs a vacation. Her mothers mental health issues are getting too bad to cope with, work is getting stressful, and things are not going well with her fiancé right now. So when a chance to go on an Alaskan cruise with her Mom and her Aunt pops up, Raleigh jumps at the chance to get away for a few days, and spend lots of time with the beautiful Alaskan scenery.
When a woman is found murdered the first day at sea, and is assumed to be a suicide, Raleigh knows that it couldn't have been suicide and she is determined to find the killer before he kills someone else on the ship. She calls for some backup and is annoyed to discover that the only agent available is her nemesis, the handsome Special Agent Jack Stephenson.
Faced with a mysterious murder that no one wants to talk about, ever widening family rifts, and her increasingly confusing feelings for Jack, Raleigh turns to God to keep her sane, and alive!
If you are into intrigue, mystery and romance, The Mountains Bow Down by Sibella Giorello is a read you wont want to miss.
Nora Finding HopeAtlantaAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Love Female FBI Agent Raleigh's HonestyMarch 29, 2011Nora Finding HopeAtlantaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I was so thankful to receive a review copy of such an exciting, fun, suspenseful, and heartfelt novel. I enjoyed reading about Raleigh, a female FBI agent, who specializes in fore4nsic geology and is good at what she does. Sibella went to school to be a geologist so its fascinating to read how geology helps Raleigh uncover clues she never would have discovered with out it.
I liked how Sibella had Raleigh sty true to her calling in life no matter how the male FBI Agents treated her. I also liked Raleigh's honesty in her feelings and how she struggled in putting God into the driver seat of her life 24/7.
Giorello takes her readers on a beautiful Alaskan cruise along with her mom and eccentric Aunt who has arranged for Raleigh to be a consultant on a movie being filmed on the cruise ship. She thought this would be a great way to enjoy each other's company, have fun and get their trip paid for.
Things were beautiful and fun until Raleigh discovers a female body hanging from the back of the cruise ship. Head of security seeks Raleigh's help in this case because she's FBI and the woman found dead was famous actor Milo's wife.
Milo was the one she was consulting on the film on how to be an FBI agent. Milo and everyone else on this project was hoping for a box office smash hit with this movie. Milo needed this to get back into the game.
Sibella Giorello pens an intriguing web of mystery, suspense, fun and quirky characters I enjoyed with well timed humor. This was a "who-done-it" that kept me guessing right up till the end. This was the first novel I've read by this author, it won't be my last. I think I'll start with The River Runs Dry, or The Clouds Roll! So many choices! Can't wait to see where this author takes me next!! I highly recommend this book and for you to check out the others!

i blog 4 books4 Stars Out Of 5The Mountains Bow Down by Sibella GiorelloMarch 7, 2011i blog 4 booksSibella Giorello is a new author for me. As I've been reading quite a bit of romance these days, I was excited to see a mystery come across my path. (Several, actually, so be looking for those reviews soon!) Raleigh Harmon is an FBI agent attempts to take a much-needed cruise vacation with her family. Her vacation comes to an abrupt halt when the wife of a famous actor on board is found dead. Murder, theft, and much craziness break out on the ship. With only five days left of the cruise, will Raleigh be able to find the culprit?
The Mountains Bow Down reads a lot like James Patterson's The Women's Murder Club series, which I have enjoyed for years. The pace is pretty quick, the characters are likable and well-developed, and there were plenty of twists in the plot to keep me intrigued. This is the third book about Raleigh Harmon, and I was able to read without many questions that would have been answered in past books.
However, the book started off pretty slow. It took me several chapters to really get intrigued, and it wasn't until FBI agent Jack Stephanson showed up that things really got interesting. I was also disappointed that this book was listed as Christian fiction, but there wasn't much mention of Christ or any biblical themes. The book was clean and had no offensive content, but I didn't think it really pointed people to Christ.
I received a free copy of this book from Thomas Nelson in exchange for my fair and honest review.
MaryBethWritesPlacerville, CAAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Cruise Into Murder...March 2, 2011MaryBethWritesPlacerville, CAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5Special Agent Raleigh Harmon planned a working vacation to Alaska as a movie consultant. Instead she finds herself wrapped up in a murder investigation. The various personalities of the ship's crew and movie people make for an intriguing gumbo of humanity. Seasoning the mix are Raleigh's mother, who is showing early signs of dementia, her aunt who matches people and crystals, and the aunt's abrasive New Age friend. Raleigh has left a fiance back home, and is wondering if accepting his proposal was the right decision.
Giorello creates an intricate story of murder and deceit, set against the beautiful backdrop of Alaska. She has an eye for the scenery and a gift for describing human nature. The book is an easy read and I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. Even the minor players get a three-dimensional treatment.
If you have an interest in mysteries, geology, law enforcement, Alaska or movie-making, you'll probably enjoy this book.
I reviewed the book from a galley provided by the publisher. I was not obligated to provide a positive review.
