We grasp the pieces much more easily than we comprehend the whole.

In 90 Days Thru the Bible, acclaimed devotional writer Chris Tiegreen and Walk Thru the Bible guide you through the major sections of Scripture, meditating on how each story and theme, like the pieces of a puzzle, beautifully contributes to God’s great story. You'll come to understand the heart of God, and the awe-inspiring story he's telling, like never before. With a 13-session guide and discussion questions for reflection, this is the perfect resource for small groups, individuals, and church groups.

This book is a rare hybrid. It is a 90 day devotional -- nothing uncommon about that. And it is a Bible overview (again, nothing unusual -- most study Bible contain book introductions). But the marriage of devotional to Bible overview is a surprisingly challenging relationship. No wonder that so few attempt it.

It leads to proportions that seem strange: single-chapter Philemon gets the same amount of time (one day) that 34-chapter Deuteronomy does. Some stories get entirely passed over. And how can you adequately cover 150 Psalms in 5 days?

It gives us less facts about the arrangement and relationship of the pieces of the Bible than we would expect from an overview, and less application than we would expect from a devotional. There is no bait from humorous stories, poems, or pithy statements like "Our Daily Bread" includes. No pictures or charts.

But in a day when we have grown accustomed to adding spices to the Bible before we'll eat it, this book is a refreshing attempt to demonstrate that the Bible can stand alone as tasty and perfectly nourishing meal. To continue the food analogy, some authors can teach you how to properly "cook" the Bible for yourself, while others provide TV dinners. But this book is something like a prepared salad: fast, but healthy. It requires chewing. Congratulations to the author, Chris Tiegreen of Walk Thru the Bible, for achieving such a rare balance.

I got this book for free from Tyndale's Blog Network in exchange for writing this review, but my review was not required to be positive.

The subtitle to this book is A Devotional Journey From Walk Thru the Bible. It is a book with a way to read thru your Bible in 90 days. It also includes an explanation of how the Bible all works together.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. It is a helpful book for those who need the challenge of reading through the Bible in a short period of time. The devotional part is easy to read and helpful when trying to understand the significance of the part of scripture you are reading for that day. I would recommend this book for those who want to read through the Bible in a short period of time. I would also recommend this book for those who need help understanding how the Bible all flows together.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

Nehemiah 6:15 tells us that the newly built wall that Nehemiah oversaw was built in 52 days. An amazing feat by any means considering the size of the wall and the opposition they faced during its rebuilding. Most people are hesitant to complete much of anything in 52 days in our century. Perhaps it's because a heavy spirit of slothfulness has crept in among us or is it because we have lost a sense of urgency to the work which we have been called to?
Let's put a little more time on that scenario, say 90 days. What can one accomplish in that amount of time? I contend that the possibilities are endless. Nations can rise or crumble in 90 days. Life can be given 90 days or developed in that same amount of time. The first trimester I must confess was the most amazing thing I read about while my wife was pregnant with our children.

How many of us can make it through the Bible in 90 days? How many of us are even willing to try. I myself have tried and failed several times. If you break it down that equates to roughly 11 chapters a day for three months. It's a tough challenge but Chris Tiegreen has managed to break up the mega text of scripture into bite sized portions easy to swallow and digest. In 90 Days Thru the Bible Tiegreen takes us on a devotional journey through the pages of scripture, all the while keeping the bigger narrative of scripture in mind.

Tiegreen goes far enough in detail to feed us for the day but not so far as to leave us confused and unready to face the challenge of the next text. He balances the narrative and application masterfully and does well to stay away from language that can leave his readers overwhelmed. He keeps the post text application short and simple yet leaves enough meat on the bone for us to be full without lacking anything.

Some people will find that reading the Bible in 90 days is a little too much for their busy lives but I promise that it will be very fruitful for you. If you can get your hands on this devotion I recommend following along as you read through the Bible. The Bible is the best-selling book of all time yet many have not read it in its entirety.
The purpose of this book is “to draw the major themes out of each book of Scripture and to meditate on how each one contributes to God's great story.” (xii) While it is an overview, it also looks at the major characters, events and themes of the Bible.

Here are a few insights from this book.
Leviticus shows us the set apart aspect of holiness. The book of Ruth “...is a case study in the scriptural truth that God lifts up the humble and draws near to the broken hearted.” (41)
While God is never mentioned in the book, “...the events of Esther seem to be clearly orchestrated by God... We too must read between the lines of our lives and decide whether our circumstances are merely random or overseen by a sovereign God.” (64)
From Psalms we learn to lament well. Jeremiah reveals God's desires for his people. We learn from Amos that we cannot measure ourselves by others. Nahum is a picture of how God will judge evil as a whole. Romans reveals God's plans in today's headlines.
“Colossians reminds us that there's a lot of spirituality in the world that appears to be pure and wise and noble, but it is essentially empty.” (178)
Paul's letters to Timothy “reveal that church life in the first century was as messy as it is today.” (185) Peter's letters reveal that we should have a long term view. Jude reminds us that the gospel covers every area of life.

This book is designed primarily as a personal devotional and there are great Questions for Reflection at the end of each daily reading. The book could also be used for small groups as thirteen sections of discussion questions are included in an Appendix.

This would be a good introduction to the Bible for a new Christian and an excellent review for the seasoned one.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

    90 Days Thru the Bible
A Devotional Journey From Walk Thru The Bible
    With Chris Tiegreen

Have you ever wanted to read through the Bible, but have never found the time? Well, you can read through the Bible in 90 days with this devotional guide. Days 1 - 56 are devoted to the Old Testament and Days 57 - 90 to the New Testament. Some books of the Bible are spread out over several days while others are covered in just one day.

90 Days Thru the Bible is not an exhaustive study but it does provide a quick insight into the Bible. At the back of this study is an Appendix that can be used for a small group discussion. The discussion questions are arranged in a 13-week plan. Weeks 1 - 8 covers the Old Testament and weeks 9 -13 covers the New Testament.

The Bible is God's story and it is our story. The Bible explores our relationship with God and this study focuses on a few of the major themes found in it. God's plan to rescue us is the main theme that runs throughout the Bible and this journey. We are taken from the very beginning of the Story all through the way to the end. Will you become a part of the Story? The choice is yours.

A few truths that you will come away with include the following:
Instead of obeying an external objective truth, we are inwardly transformed because it's our new nature. This is an ideal that we are growing into.

I Corinthians is written to new believers who have issues with their faith, they are self-centered and casual in their commitment and beliefs.

We can't lose heart when we have difficulties, we need to endure.

God's timing is outside of our understanding.

When tragedy strikes, this isn't the end of the story but there is a lesson to be learned.

Tyndale House Publishers has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of this review, all opinions expresses are my own.
