Product Description

For years secular critics and liberal scholars have cast doubt on the historical accuracy of the Synoptic Gospels. Now four noted New Testament scholars examine opposing views of the origins of Matthew, Mark, and Luke from an evangelical perspective. Discussion includes analyses of "Two-Source or Markan Priority View"; "Two-Gospel or Matthean Priority View"; and "Independence View." 448 pages, hardcover from Kregel.

While the vast majority of conservative scholars have embraced the "Two-Source Hypothesis," and a smaller number, the "Two-Gospel Hypothesis," I think it is good to keep the "Independence View" in mind. It reminds us that we don't know how the synoptics were formed, and that it may very well defy human understanding until the Lord comes. The Independence View asserts a bold freedom from an Enlightenment mentality that would eliminate any explanation that smacks of supernaturalism. All too often this important minority view (which is actually quite diverse)is either ignored or given extremely short shrift by the majority.

I thought this was an excellent and much needed conservative treatement of the proposed Synoptic Problem. Robert Thomas should be applauded. I hope his work encourages other like-minded scholars to do the same.
