Product Description

Sam Hawke runs an activities program called Haven in inner-city St. Louis. He resents journalist Ana Burns's determination to expose the Haven's eroding infrastructure and possibly shut down the center. While battling these issues, Sam and Ana gradually become aware of another, more sinister problem at Haven: the underbelly of the child sex industry. As they follow the thread of deceit to its insidious core, Sam and Ana will do whatever it takes to protect innocent children, even if that means putting their own lives-and their growing love-in jeopardy.

Publisher's Description

Something was terribly wrong with the shy, scared little girl. Every day, she came to Haven, Sam Hawke's inner-city youth center. But the former marine couldn't get Flora to open up. So he turned to newspaper reporter Ana Burns, hoping that her skill at asking nosy questions about him and his mission could be put to better use.

Flora quickly captured Ana's heart. As did Sam and his dream of providing a haven for children with nowhere else to go. Ana's questions were soon answered—and worst fears confirmed—about little Flora. And protecting her and the center from a powerful predator would take all their love and faith combined.

This was an awesome book that touched on a topic that many view as taboo. It's an issue that happens all too often in our society. Excellent book!!

The simple assignment of reporting on the lead paint in the city was not what Ana was expecting to do. However, that story begins at Haven, a center dedicated to helping children. Once at Haven, she discovers more than a lead paint mystery. One child cries out for help from Ana by her fear-filled eyes. The basis of the fear is what makes this book a difficult read. She was sold by her parents to what they thought was a better life...a life of unspeakable events. Nothing dealing with the girls in the book is described but the events experienced are colored with words to share the horribleness of the situations. The warped mind of the instigator is revealed through his thinking through his problems. It brings home that people are not always what they seem. At the end, you are glad for the justice, but as a Mom, the book left me feeling this is not a book for everyone and grateful our children have not had such experiences.

Wonderful, suspensful, captivating! This book is a departure from Catherine Palmer's Victorian style, and it is fantastic!! The storyline deals with a reporter assigned to do a story, and how she ends up solving a mystery, saving a little girl, and falling in love. The author shows how sometimes a child knows who is trustworthy better than adults do, and the pitfalls of making assumptions without having all the facts. She also shows how trust, once lost, is not easy to regain, even between good friends. Even with all the struggles the characters face, good does triumph and the guy gets the girl. This is one of Cathy's best books!
