JeanneUnited StatesAge: Over 65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5This book was very easy to read.May 9, 2013JeanneUnited StatesAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 2It was an interesting book that followed the trail of desegregation and prohibition. It was interesting that not every generation got along with the next one; but, they worked on the same or similar public issues.

The author wrote from three different character perspective and there were times I had to go back and reread one perspective to clarify another's. This was not the authors first time writing in this style and I did not have any trouble with the first one, so I'm not sure why this time it through me off so much. The characters did not seem to interest me and I did find myself putting this book down to read other things.
But not every author's books are going to be a winner to everyone, so with that being said, her writing was solid as usual and I did not find any plot holes.
LeorahUSAAge: Under 18Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Fabulous read!November 30, 2011LeorahUSAAge: Under 18Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5First of all, I love the way Lynn Austin allowed us to interact with each woman throughout that family line. Being able to feel and see what each generation had to go through really made the book for me. It was sad to see what they had to go through but it also gave me something to think about and I felt a whole lot closer with the characters because of it.
The connection with the characters was actually what made it so hard for me to finish the book. I didn't want to leave Harriet or her grandma behind! I absolutely loved those two characters which was something else that kept me enthralled by the book. They were just so real, fun, and quirky! Especially the grandma! They are definite favorites!
I also loved how God was weaved throughout the story. It was gentle but I liked how He helped give the characters hope and strength to do what they knew was right. And especially when they were struggling. That gives me hope and strength.
Anyway, this is a definite 5 out of 5 and I totally recommend it! You won't be sorry!

This was a great book! I loved the way we interacted with different women in this family throughout the generations--watching how each generation dealt with their own struggles and hardships! I really didn't want to put this book down. I hope you enjoy it, too!
Christin4 Stars Out Of 5March 6, 2011ChristinI really enjoyed the way Austen weaves together the stories of four generations of women which makes for an entertaining story. While Harriet's story is the main focus of the book the other stories are just as important to the overall plot. All four stories help the reader understand why Harriet was thrown in jail but we are not given the full explanation until almost the end, which keeps readers wanting to read more to find out just why. Since there are three separate narratives within the book at times the story can be hard to follow. First of all there is Harriet in jail and all that is happening to her there; second flashbacks to various important events in Harriet's life where she first heard the stories about her Great-Grandmother, Grandmother and mother, and third accounts of the events in the women's lives. The book jumps from one narrative to the next often with little or no warning; and some readers may find this confusing at times. Fortunately, while the narratives are separate from each other for the most part each is told in chronological order which helps clarify things.
