New to Children's Ministry?
So, are you new to ChildrenâÂÂs Ministry? Are you looking for a few, fresh ideas to help give a boost to your existing ministry? Need any reminders about how to handle some key issues as a leader to kids and volunteers? Then this little book, 9 Things They DidnâÂÂt Teach Me in College About ChildrenâÂÂs Ministry from Ryan Frank and Standard Publishing, is just what you need!
Ryan, a veteran of ChildrenâÂÂs Ministry and founder of KidzMatter, covers such topics as: what a âÂÂsuccessfulâ childrenâÂÂs ministry looks like, working effectively with your senior pastor, networking with other CM folks, how to recruiting volunteers for the âÂÂlong-haul,' budgets & many moreâ¦
This quick read has some fun layout aspects to it, as well. Interviews with big-time childrenâÂÂs ministry folks, along with snap shots of insight from some of RyanâÂÂs Facebook friends, help break up the reading and provide a unique twist to the traditional reading format. I enjoyed this book, with one noted exceptionâ¦
The brief glance at Family Ministry within the last chapter of the book, I think does a disservice to leaders within childrenâÂÂs ministry. (Honestly, it almost feels like a last-minute add on to the book.) The issues are laid out well, and insight is given to developing a strategy, but how the church responds to these issues will directly impact and shape the future of Christianity. I would have liked to have seen Ryan addrss this issue in great detail. (Perhaps a future book idea???) Churches should take a hard look at how Biblical and effective their current childrenâÂÂs ministries are, and then consider if things need to change.
