Product Description

As a young theology student, Harold Kushner puzzled over the Book of Job. As a small-town rabbi he counseled other people through pain and grief. But not until he learned that his three-year-old son, Aaron, would die in his early teens of a rare disease did he confront one of life's most difficult questions: Where do we find the resources to cope when tragedy strikes? In his new preface to this anniversary edition, Rabbi Kushner relates the heartwarming responses he has received over the last two decades from people who have found inspiration and comfort from his book.

Publisher's Description

As a young theology student, Harold Kushner puzzled over the Book of Job. As a small-town rabbi he counseled other people through pain and grief. But not until he learned that his three-year-old son, Aaron, would die in his early teens of a rare disease did he confront one of life's most difficult questions: Where do we find the resources to cope when tragedy strikes?

"I knew that one day I would write this book," says Rabbi Kushner. "I would write it out of my own need to put into words some of the most important things I have come to believe and know. And I would write it to help other people who might one day find themselves in a similar predicament. I am fundamentally a religious man who has been hurt by life, and I wanted to write a book that could be given to the person who has been hurt by life, and who knows in his heart that if there is justice in the world, he deserved better. . . . If you are such a person, if you want to believe in God's goodness and fairness but find it hard because of the things that have happened to you and to people you care about, and if this book helps you do that, then I will have succeeded in distilling some blessing out of Aaron's pain and tears."

Since its original publication in 1981, When Bad Things Happen to Good People has brought solace and hope to millions. In his new preface to this anniversary edition, Rabbi Kushner relates the heartwarming responses he has received over the last two decades from people who have found inspiration and comfort within these pages.

If you know anyone struggling with an illness or a recent loss, this is one of the best books out there!

Harold Kushner provides a lot of wisdom concerning Scripture, suffering, and the character of God.

My favorite imagery from the book is picturing God on your side. It reminds me of the Scripture, "if God is for us, who can be against us?" or a favorite from Romans 8 that "nothing can separate us from the love of God."

This book paints a Christ-centered picture of God. A God that is all-powerful, but is also all-loving.

I continue to recommend this book and Greg Boyd's book Is God To Blame? to every I can think of struggling with these kinds of questions :)

I appreciated King's review of this book, which was donated to our church library. As church librarian, I needed to decide if it was sound theologically and appropriate for the library. At first glance, it looked very good . The book has many wise and compassionate moments. But the chapter "God Can't Do Everything" appears to have some very misleading rationalizations regarding faith and prayer.

This book has nothing to do with Christianity or a Biblical / Christian worldview. The author states in this book that God is not ALL-POWERFUL and that God Can Not stop bad things from happening to people or innocent people. He says that people need to forgive God when bad things happen, as it is not Gods fault that these bad things are happening as God cannot do anything about these bad situations or circumstances anyways as He is not all-powerful... The author also states that people need to forgive God for making such an unfair and dangerous world. The author says he finds a rewriting or a different ending to the book of Job more appropriate. In this rewritten version of Job, God does not bless them with more children and possessions etc in the end of the book - but Job and his wife forgive God and blow on the coals of their hearts Blow on the coals of their hearts means that Job and his wifes love and love for each other will carry them through these tragedies and allow them to have and live meaningful lives I purchased this book in hopes of giving it to an inquiring unbelieving friend thank you God that I read it first! This not a book I would recommend to anyone!
