The person who approaches R.C.s Sprouls newly revised small volume, Five Things Every Christian Needs To Grow might be tempted to place this book in that category because of its similar size and title. But they would miss out. This work is, in 135 concentrated but highly readable pages, a simple outlining of the five disciplines every Christian must pursue to grow in their faith and life in Christ. While the book contains all the common hallmarks of this genre interesting stories and personal anecdotes, illustrations from Bible stories retold in contemporary language Sproul deftly lays out why the disciplines of Bible study, prayer, worship, service, and stewardship are essential to the life of a believer (Col. 1:10). For those who are new to the Christian faith, Sproul simply and clearly presents the reasons why each of these disciplines is essential to the faith, and winningly describes the blessings to be derived from them.
Those who are older in the faith and skeptical of reviewing these one more time, will also be blessed by Sprouls pointed reminders of why these disciplines are so important. For example, to those who struggle with or are frustrated by a particular portion or book of Scripture, Sproul admonishes us to consider that [i]f I dont like something I read in Scripture, perhaps I simply dont understand it. If so, studying it again may help. If, in fact, I do understand the passage and still dont like it, this is not an indication there is something wrong with the Bible. Its an indication there is something wrong with me. The final Question and Answer chapter offers common questions Sproul hears in relation to these disciplines, and are clearly and compellingly addressed.
This small book offers great insight for Christians new and old alike. -- Rachael Starke, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

It will be recommended to new church members to help them grow and develop in areas of Bible study, prayer, worship, service and stewardship. It will likewise be recommended to those who have been Christians longer to strengthen their growth in all five of these Christian disciplines. This is a concise, to-the point approach to Christian growth and development.
Anthony Shuler4 Stars Out Of 5Good bookJuly 15, 2011Anthony ShulerQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4The title of this book pretty well sums up what it's about. The five things are Bible Study, Prayer, Worship, Service and Stewardship. One chapter is dedicated to each of these topics and Sproul closes the book with a solid Q and A chapter. This book would be a great resource for new Christians who need to learn about the basics of religious practice. It's also good for anyone more established in his faith to brush up on his fundamental of Christian living. So then it's good for anyone. The book itself was easily understood and written and a very practical and personal level. Very good work. My only real problem is on the Stewardship chapter. I believe in giving but I reject the tithe on theological grounds. The chapter is clearly in favor of the tithe but I don't believe Sproul did a good job of supporting his view Biblically. He tries a little and did a better job than most but I'm just not convinced. Let the reader judge for himself. Minor disagreement aside I still recommend the book.

PHarvAge: 35-44Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Great supplement to daily Bible readingMarch 30, 2011PHarvAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I actually ordered 2 copies, both for new believers, based on my opinion that Dr. Sproul combines theological knowledge & insight that is second to none withe the rare ability to communicate it in understandable ways to "every day" people. I did peruse the book and like all of Sproul's books, it did not disappoint. Beginning your Christian walk recognizing that the Scriptures serve as both compass & map is essential, but a little book like this can really be helpful in that it has identified some of the essential ingredients for growth, and pulled them right from Scripture. A real blessing & resource for the church.....
David ShawTecumseh, OK5 Stars Out Of 5February 9, 2011David ShawTecumseh, OKQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The thought I had while reading this book is that it would be a helpful resource to give a new believer. The information found in it would be of great value to new converts because this book covers topics that are needed to grow in Christ. In the chapter on service the author, RC Sproul from Ligonier Ministries, explains why he chose the five topics discussed in this book. To quote, "The five practices we are exploring in this book are all means of grace. A means of grace is a tool or instrument that God uses to strengthen and nurture us so that we grow in conformity to Christ." The five tools that RC gives us are foundational to growth in Christ - Bible study, prayer, worship, service and stewardship. Clearly these are tools that all Christians, new and old alike, need each day in their walk with God.
RC writes in a clear and easily understood manner. A person doesn't need a theological degree to grasp each topic and the importance they have in the life of a Christian. He takes us to Scripture to show us how each tool is needed and required of believers. RC's desire for his readers to grow in Christ is evident on every page.
I would encourage anyone to pick up this little book, new believer or life-long Christian. When you finish you will be better equipped to grow in Christ.
