What kind of leadership will effectively lead the church into the morally turbulent twenty-first century? The same kind of leadership that led it through the morally and politically chaotic first century. Shepherding.
This is the kind of leadership Jesus used, and this is the kind of leadership that will take his church where he wants it to go.
While the term “shepherd” produces warm images of love, care, and tenderness, it also describes a form of leadership that is perilously protective, dangerous, dirty, and smelly.
“Shepherd” is something that every follower of Christ, the Good Shepherd, is called to become.
Lynn Anderson, in this important book, leads us backwards in time to discover and identify the biblical leader for the future needs of the Christian community. Anderson’s deep dig for truth will concern, convict, and confront us about where leadership has been, and will set a new standard for where the future leader must go.
Anderson's lifelong career of ministry has involved speaking nationwide to thousands of audiences and authoring eight books -- including The Shepherd's Song; Navigating the Winds of Change; Heaven Came Down; They Smell like Sheep, Volume 1; and If I Really Believe, Why Do I Have These Doubts?
He and his wife, Carolyn, live in Dallas. They are the parents of four grown children and the grandparents of eight wonderful grandchildren.

It has been a great book for all levels of learning and ideas about church leadership. We have had a great time with this study.
Richard Horn5 Stars Out Of 5July 24, 2008Richard HornWhen I first saw the title I thought the book was about the flock. But the author soon made it apparent that it is the pastors who should smell like their sheep through close proximity. I agree with the author that the mission of pastors is to be among the people they care for instead of leading from a corner office. Mr. Anderson's volume 2 in this series builds upon the concepts presented here. If you like these books you will also like "Simple Church: Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples."
Kit Ord5 Stars Out Of 5January 3, 2008Kit OrdThis book should be compulsory reading in every seminary worldwide. The concepts described are so powerful yet so simply described that it is difficult to understand why Pastors, Elders and Christians everywhere have not followed these principles. In Satan's world, "leadership" has been perverted into "having the power and authority to control" rather than being a simple concept of "service".This book is light and easy to read and, while listing references to the Bible, does not clutter up the flow of the text with them.A very highly recommended read!
Travis Irwin5 Stars Out Of 5February 10, 2004Travis IrwinAmericans have little idea what shepherding is. We do, however, understand Madison Avenue and the military. The Bible idea of shepherding must be studied in the context of a foreign culture where shepherding sheep took place. Smell Like Sheep helps the reader to get a biblical (vs. Madison Ave. or military) view of leadership. One learns best from the master/good shepherd. Lynn Anderson is pointing church leaders back to a biblical type of leadership based on service and being among the sheep/other believers. I highly recommend it.
