Martha Artyomenko5 Stars Out Of 5September 14, 2010Martha ArtyomenkoA book every young person could read and enjoy! Martitia is a orphan, taken in by a Quaker doctor's family. She learns how to laugh, love and be part of a family...and how "Every tub ought to stand on it's own bottom" One of our family favorites to be re-read over and over.
Marnee5 Stars Out Of 5October 15, 2008MarneeI loved this book. I have never been able to read a book more than once, but this one I read four times! It is so real and sweet and positive; it always brightens my day. There is such a variety of love expressed by the characters that it gives a wide range of insights into the human person. It is very well written and a classic to me.
Elisabeth5 Stars Out Of 5January 6, 2007ElisabethMy sisters and I have laughed and cried over this book and read it again and again. There are plentiful helpings of adventure and humor, as well as a few tears, and the characters seem like living, breathing people who grow and learn and love. With a tender, loving father, a sweet, hard-working mother, a Quaker grandfather, two girls of drastically differing personalities, and five big, laughing boys, this book is one of my favorites. It is well-written and historically accurate, with a beautiful and believable story.
Meg5 Stars Out Of 5January 1, 2007MegThree generations of my family have read and loved this story. Orphaned Martitia is enveloped by a large, loving family and learns the value of work, loving sacrifice, "keeping a trust," and laughter. A beautiful example of how people blossom in the midst of love and acceptance. Set historically in the South before the Civil War, the issue of slavery is touched on. An inspiring story for any age.
