I have a mixed feeling reading through this book. I think I am expecting the book contains amusing and touching anecdotes about the creation of those hymns. However, what I found is the contains are too factual for my liking. It has the feeling of reading a history book. Although, it is good that the book provide great source of facts regarding the hymns, I would only treat it as a reference book. It would be hard for me to write through it again the second time.

Robert J. Morgan provides lyrics, sheet music, and nuggets of information about the writers, as well as the circumstances which led them to pen these well loved words. The book format lends itself to use as a devotional, as each page includes a scripture reference which either inspired the hymn, or is related to the words. There are sections devoted to Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. American patriotic hymns are also included, along with a selection of other favourites.
Although a number of the entries were excellent, I found some rather disappointing: the "background" story had little or nothing to do with the hymn itself, or seemed to be more related to American history than anything else. This was particularly noticeable in the patriotic section.
If you know little or nothing about the history of this type of music, and would like to learn a few details, I would recommend this book. If you are unfamiliar with the older hymns, this is an excellent way to learn the beautiful and inspirational lyrics, and the lovely tunes. If you are looking for more in depth history about the composers or their compositions, you will need to keep looking!
I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishers as part of their book review program. I was not required to write a positive review; the opinions I have expressed are my own.

When you finally turn the last page you feel as full as you do at five o'clock in the evening on Thanksgiving Day. Other books can only be enjoyed a bit at a time-like fine chocolate. Satisfying bite after satisfying bite. Think of "Then Sings My Soul" as the finest of Swiss chocolate. No, actually like a whole box of chocolates.
"Then Sings My Soul" is a collection of 150 of the best loved hymns of the past few centuries. Morgan gives us a glimpse into the lives of the very normal individuals that penned some of the greatest songs our world has heard. These hymns simply convey the truth of the Gospel, the wholeness of the Scriptures, and the greatness of our faith.
In this modern church age, many have not had the privilege of learning hymns such as Crosby's "Near the Cross" or Watts' "Alas! And Did My Savior My Savior Bleed". These are favorites of a time that has passed by, but hold truths that will remain for all eternity.
Some might find Then Sings My Soul boring or foreign or perhaps a little dated. I found it a refreshing ode to great hymn writers and hymns of yesteryear.
An Avid ReaderAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5I just love this book!February 14, 2011An Avid ReaderAge: 18-24Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have just finished reading Then Sings My Soul, Special Edition, by Robert Morgan, and I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I enjoyed a nonfiction book so much! The book contains 150 favorite hymns and the stories behind them.
Whatever your favorite hymn, it can probably be found in this delightful book. From "Amazing Grace" to "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" and everything in between, Then Sings My Soul has it all. The "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "I'll Fly Away," "Faith of Our Fathers," "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing"-- they are all there! Two pages are devoted to each hymn. One has the complete hymn exactly as it would appear in a hymnal, so that you can also sing the hymn directly from this book. The other page is devoted to a story about the author or the circumstances of the hymn's writing.
I don't know about you, but when I like something, I want to find out everything I can about it. And so for me, Then Sings My Soul was a delight. I've been reading the hymn-writers' names in the hymnal every week since I was a little girl, and I always wondered who these mysterious people were who could write such beautiful songs. And now, at last, I know! I also found Then Sings My Soul to be great for use during my devotions time.
