Luke leaves his beloved Wyoming Ranch to travel to Valley Falls, New York, to collect his inheritance left by his grandfather and also to bring his sister Samantha home. That was his plan, but things got a mite complicated once he arrived in Valley Falls. He discovers his sister doesn't want to leave but instead continue on with her education under the beautiful Miss Elizabeth Wells. When Luke begins to get besotted by this lovely teacher, he knows he should high-tail it out of there quick! But his wealthy grandfather had left him his estate, businesses, and the Girls school where Miss Wells teaches. How is he going to be able to sell everything and uproot all these people and their livelihoods, just so that he can return to his family's ranch to live comfortably on the inheritance?
Women's education is extremely important to Elizabeth Wells. But more often than not, people thought it was unnecessary, and especially in the light of the bad press and the monies the Hayes Academy for Girls is losing. Elizabeth has a constant battle on her hands as she fights these pre-conceived ideas of education for women from Luke, the public, her own family, and even from the school board itself. And the poor woman has to also contend with a former cruel fiancé, an interfering mother, and thievery and deceitfulness by people she would never expect it from. Elizabeth is a fighter but will it all become too much for her, and can she count on Luke or will he end up letting her down as well?
Cowboy meets city in this captivating and compelling story by Naomi Rawlings. I'm not an avid reader of Love Inspired books as I've read a few that aren't too great, but I'm confident in saying this one is definitely the exception. It not only had me in tears a few times but past half way, I couldn't put the book down. Thank you for this enjoyable read Naomi, I'm now very keen to read your other books!
KavRCanadaGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Winning HistoricalDecember 18, 2013KavRCanadaGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Rawlings has the ability to reduce this reader to a churning mass of emotions and I love it!!!! From an infuriating mother to a taciturn hero and a feisty, stubborn heroine there's angst aplenty. I enjoyed the unusual twist of rancher going east. Plucking Luke out of his comfort zone created a great platform in which to reveal his inner character. Elizabeth's past (and frankly her horrendous family) have made it difficult for her to trust so Luke has his work cut out for him. Loved watching those two skirt around the real issues as they try to deny their growing attraction. The author certainly knows how pace a romance. Rawlings has penned another winning historical.
GlennHaggertyMinneapolis, MN5 Stars Out Of 5Dynamic CharactersDecember 13, 2013GlennHaggertyMinneapolis, MNQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Luke Hayes, a Wyoming cowboy of the 1890's inherits his grandfather's estate and travels to Albany NY to settle what he discovers are vast holdings—and retrieve his 17-year-old sister. At the fancy boarding school near grandfather's home, he also meets Elizabeth Wells, her sister's math instructor who catches his eye. But the financial crash of 1893 and an ill advised editorial has the Hayes Academy in turmoil. Sinister plots and complicated family dynamics swirl around the hero and heroine while their feelings for one another escalate from confrontational, to warm to sizzling. Will the intrigues force the couple onto separate paths?
The author masterfully employs romantic descriptions and musings to place the reader in the skins of the hero and heroine, and their nuanced personality and spiritual development was most entertaining and instructive. The complex, yet elegant plot weaves together spiritual, emotional, and family issues of forgiveness, control, false allegiances, false guilt and trust into an inspiring story. The author gave me a copy of the manuscript in exchange for a fair review.
