Product Description

Josephus's writings on ancient Jewish thought, background, and history are now more accessible than ever!

This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament.

Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of Josephus' works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers. Also includes expanded indexes and the text and notes of Whiston's 4-volume study on Josephus.

This work of history though not a part of scripture is well written as one might expect from a historian of Josephus's caliber, and was well translated by William Whiston.

Josephus is very matter of fact whilst commenting on what we know as the old testament while also adding depth to those subjects.

This is an in depth book is well worth the read and a good investment for those looking for an outside witness to the Bible.

I find it also to be easy to understand and read there are a few nice gems in this book and I would suggest it to anyone looking to add life to their view of Biblical events.

The Works of Josephus are, I would say, almost essential for the busy Christian pastor to take time-out, if you like, to read and to master. His works form a brilliant part of the background of the formation of our faith which every Minister ought to master and be familiar with. Christianity is not a philosophy grounded only in reason or sense experience, as many are; in addition it is rooted in history. That makes it even more relevant to the Christian believer and powerful towards the sceptic. Every Christian pastor and apologist should have and use a copy.
