Publisher's Description

This six-book series centers around two 23rd century goofballs, Tuna and Herby, who travel back in time to study TJ Finkelstein for their history project. TJ will someday become a great leader who demonstrates honesty, integrity, thoughtfulness, self-sacrifice, respect for others—all traits she hones and grasps through her adventures in this series. Unfortunately, Tuna and Herby get stuck in TJ’s time (modern day), so she has to deal with their schemes while juggling the normal issues of a seventh grader who has moved to a new city, is trying to fit in, and is coping with her mother’s death and her family’s new life.

Just imagine being a 21st century 7th grade girl moving into a totally new area, facing the horrors of an unknown school filled with who knows what kind of rich and snobbish kids, and, to top it all off, having to cope with two boys from the 23rd century! In New Kid Catastrophes, TJ has to do it all while at the same time figuring out if she is a kind and considerate person (even though almost everybody around her tends to be anything but K & C). Aghhhh! TJ has to cope with daily Physical Embarrassment (gym to the rest of us), a movie starlet/hyped on herself classmate, a Science Fair with all the added attraction of 23rd century goof-ups, and her little sister. Will TJ ever figure out who the really nice people are? Will she be given the breathing space to do it?

Bill Myers' youth books are becoming notorious (oops! should have said noticed). He is one of those responsible for McGee and Me. His inimitable style -- filled with hilariously weird jokes, off-beat sound effects, and a lot of understanding for the youth of today -- is faintly reminiscent of what P.G. Wodehouse wrote in an earlier generation. The reader does not have to dig very far to find the underlying lessons amidst this merry mayhem. Those good basic Christian living lessons slide in effortlessly with the chortles and guffaws, and stay put in the readers mind. Both public and Christian schools will find use for New Kid Catastrophes. Its interest holding capacities encourage continued silent reading. With all its sound effects, it also works really well read aloud. – Donna Eggett, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
