    Tell us a little about yourself.  I was born in Lancaster County, PA, and lived there for the first fifteen years of my life. My maternal grandmother was of the strictest Old Order Mennonite (horse-and-buggy Mennonites), and she was shunned when she began seeing the ministerial student who was to become my grandfather. Much of my inspiration for stories comes from the many personal accounts of Grandmother Ada (Ranck) Buchwalter's experiences growing up in a Plain community, not far from my own place of birth. I'm forever grateful to my grandmother for her courage and great faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

    How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  This story has gripped my heart like no other I've ever written. The main character, Rose Kauffman, is a glowing example of mercy and love--of extending oneself to an outcast considered to be unlovely. Rose's married sister, Hannah (called Hen) is attempting to right the wrongs of her youthful past, yearning to return to the Old Ways and her Christian Amish upbringing, with her little girl in tow. The overall spiritual theme of this book points to how the Amish people embrace the sovereignty of God's will, despite life's distressing circumstances and loss.
