Publisher's Description

In a plush Virginia office, a rich, angry old man is furiously rewriting his will. With his death just hours away, Troy Phelan wants to send a message to his children, his ex-wives, and his minions—a message that will touch off a vicious legal battle and transform dozens of lives. Because Troy Phelan’s new will names a sole surprise heir to his eleven-billion-dollar fortune: a mysterious woman named Rachel Lane, a missionary living deep in the jungles of Brazil.

Enter the lawyers. Nate O’Riley is fresh out of rehab, a disgraced corporate attorney handpicked for his last job: to find Rachel Lane at any cost. As Phelan’s family circles like vultures in D.C., Nate goes crashing through the Brazilian jungle, entering a world where money means nothing, where death is just one misstep away, and where a woman—pursued by enemies and friends alike—holds a stunning surprise of her own.

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from John Grisham's Sycamore Row.

My sister recommended this book to me since we as a family were going through a similar situation with an alcoholic family member. Some of this book is rather raw but it treats life as it is, not what we would like it to be. In the end, this story of redemption is both intriguing and wonderful. It is an easy and exciting read. I enjoyed this book a lot and would recommend it to all.

Very good book. First and only book I read from this author so far, but I reallllly liked it. The story is fun to read, interesting and different. I was surprised to see how strong the Christian message is in that book. I wasn't expecting to read about that in that kind of book.

It is a book about a billionnaire who dies and leaves a will that gives all his fortune to a certain Rachel Lane, missionary in the deep forest of Brasil, instead of giving it to his three ex-wives and many children. The missionary's message is really strong and inspiring, and changes the life of Nate, the lawyer who goes on an excursion to find her in the forest, in a secluded Indian village where she lives.

Through his discovery of Rachel Lane, who she is and where she has been living, Nate learns a lot more and gets transformed by the message of Christ. It is only after he receives this message that Nate can finally get his life back on track.

Great book, great story and great moral!

    A must-read!

Also very cool portrayal of the judiciary system...

This book really portrayed a powerful message about the change that can take place when someone becomes a Christian. The sub-plots and themes are equally profound and will really start you thinking. It's the first Grisham book that I have read, and I really liked it. The ending is wonderful! The only reason I gave it a lower rating is that some may find the language offensive, but if you can get past that, it is an excellent read.

Though Grisham's books have all been bestsellers, "The Testament" is one of his finest achievements. When compared with works of other contemporary fiction writers, Grisham's novels stand out as cleaner, and more original. His plots never fail to surprise and entertain. Grisham is supposedly a Christian but it is not noticeable in most of his books. "The Testament" is an exception in its vivid depiction of a contented missionary in contrast with the emptiness of North American materialism. As such, this novel not only entertains, it also brings a hard hitting thought-provoking message, that should cause us all to examine ourselves, and ask ourselves whether the emptiness in the lives of the characters in this book is manifest in our own life. Conversely, if we seek peace and contentedness in our own life, it is found in the same place where Grisham's missionary protagonist finds it - in Jesus Christ and the God of the Bible. It is this theological message underlying "The Testament" that distinguishes this novel from most of Grisham's others. Not only is this book an entertaining page-turner, it also will leave you thinking about the purpose and meaning of life.
