oldmanchubbAge: 25-34Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Good Summation of Church HistoryOctober 12, 2012oldmanchubbAge: 25-34Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Justo Gonzalez essentially wrote one very large volume on the history of Christianity and it has been broken into two parts to make it more accessible (I am including reviews for both works). After all, we're talking about two thousand years of history here. Like many histories, the diving point is things prior to the Reformation and things after. This split makes sense for a two-volume work.
Church history isn't exactly the most riveting matter for most Christians and Gonzalez has done a terrific job in making this topic very readable and enjoyable. He traces the world from the time of Jesus through recent events. Obviously this will need to be revised as time goes on. He makes ample use of charts and maps and pictures and even after seminary his work is still a great guide in sermonizing and teaching.
I would highly recommend this work for anyone who is interested in knowing more about the history of the Christian church. Obviously it's hard to cover so much ground in so "short" a work, but Gonzalez treats his topics fairly thoroughly. One can sit down and read it as a regular book or it also serves its purpose as more of a reference material. -
Nolan5 Stars Out Of 5The Story of Christianity, Vol. 2 by Justo GonzalezFebruary 21, 2020NolanQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5A welcome and useful continuation of the narrative Gonzalez did so well in Vol. 1. Besides a good survey of the Reformation era this volume also enlightens the reader into the huge influence that the discovery and settlement of the new world had on the church. While Gonzalez does a better job than most on relating the story of the dissenters (those not Lutheran, Reformed or Catholic) throughout the centuries, I also recommend The Reformers and Their Stepchildren by Verduin and The Anabaptist Story by Estep to those who wish to delve further into that area of church history.

Doug5 Stars Out Of 5... To Be ContinuedAugust 18, 2020DougQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Our theology discussion group used Gonzalez' Volume I as the text for three courses on the history of our faith. The results were excellent. The text received unanimous praise for its range of coverage and readability for our purposes. We have previewed Volume II, anticipating that it too will be a superior text for our exploration of Christianity's experience and development over the its most recent seven centuries. As they say, ... more later.

preachertom4 Stars Out Of 5Great book on Church HistoryDecember 10, 2018preachertomQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This was a great book on church history! It really goes into detail where it needs too on an over view of the history of the church. I only found a few places to be dry but yet necessary for the subject it was covering. The other does a great job of pulling in world events and the effects that they have had on the church. He helps us meet the church fathers in a way the helps us to understand them and how they effected the church. For someone who wants a good place to start a study on church History this is the book for you!
