Product Description

When successful New York editor Jen Gibbs discovers a decaying slush-pile manuscript on her desk, she has no idea that the story of Sarra, a young mixed-race woman trapped in Appalachia at the turn of the twentieth century, will both take her on a journey and change her forever. Happy with her life in the city, and at the top of her career with a new job at Vida House Publishing, Jen has left her Appalachian past and twisted family ties far behind. But the search for the rest of the manuscript, and Jen's suspicions about the identity of its unnamed author, will draw her into a mystery that leads back to the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains . . . and quite possibly through the doors she thought she had closed forever.

When I read a Lisa Wingate book, it's always on two levels--one for the

engaging story, the other for the beautiful prose. Neither disappointed

with "The Story Teller". A story of cultures intersecting, lost things

found, secrets revealed, historical mysteries, newfound purpose and a hint of romance. A winning

combination for any book. I found myself sneaking moments to read--getting

up early, finding a quiet place at lunch and, of course, staying up late.

In this story within a story, Lisa captured how I felt when she wrote of the mysteriously found

manuscript entitled, "The Story Teller: "The "Story Teller" beckoned, seeming to have an understanding

of its power. It whispered unrelentingly as the day continued..Rand and Sarra flickered through my thoughts like a leaf shadows against a window, parting, then flickering, then parting again, stealing my attention."

"The Story Teller also reminds each of us that we have a story. With that story comes the responsibility to share it, to pass it along to our family. "Our stories are powerful. They teach, they speak, they inspire. They bring about change. But they are also fragile. Their threads are so easily broken by time, by lack of interest, by failure to understand the value that comes of knowing where we have been and who we have been...when we lose our stories, we lose ourselves."

And as in all of Lisa's books we see two things 1, That there is always an opportunity to change, to become better. "Remember that no matter how many wrong choices we've made in the past, we can always decide to make the right ones today The past need not determine one moment of the future." And 2, God's role in our lives: "The threatening God of my youth... might instead be a God of both purpose and provision. That He might have been looking after me all these years, laying down a path while I worked to convince myself that I was going my own way."

This book wasn't nearly long enough, I didn't want to give up the characters and their lives.

    Truly an exceptional read

I cannot say enough about The Carolina Series by Lisa Wingate. Starting with the novella The Seaglass Sisters, I was hooked. Then came The Prayer Box: one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. Next: The Tidewater Sisters: another winner. I was thrilled to receive an advanced reader copy of The Story Keeper. Immediately I traveled from the Outer Banks of NC to my own beloved Blue Ridge Mountains. Using a dual storyline and setting, Lisa Wingate drew me into both the mysterious Melungeons of long ago and the current group of people who live the the mountains today. Tying both together by using an old manuscript left me unable to stop reading until the end. This one like the others is definitely a winner and one I will reread many times. I will be looking forward to the next book in this series.

Jen Gibbs, a successful editor accepts a job a publishing house in New York City. One day a mysterious manuscript appears on her desk from the slush pile in the office. As she starts reading the manuscript, she is slowly drawn into the life of Sarra, a mixed race Melungeon girl trapped by dangerous men in the Appalachia Mountains. Jen left the city and headed to the Blue Ridge Mountains to see if she could solve the mystery.

Lisa is a true story teller and has the ability to draw the reader into the story and characters lives. This is one book that I will reread time and time again

After reading the book, I now fully understand some of the issues that the people who live there today deal with on a day to day basis, like poverty and isolation. I read many books this summer and this one stands out as one of the BEST!! I am an avid reader and can go through three to four books a week. Can't wait till Lisa publishes her next book.

Yes, I would highly recommend this book to everyone who is a fan of Lisa Wingate or looking for a new author to fall in love with.

I am so glad that I got picked as one of the sisters in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Book by Lisa. This book was every bit as good as the first book that I read by her (The Prayer Box). The fact that there was a story within a story in this book is an added bonus in my opinion. Jen is such a strong character in this book, she new she needed to leave home at a young age to get away from her past but with the drop of manuscript on her desk she finds the past is not as far away as it seemed. I enjoyed meeting some other characters along the way like sweet Hannanh - I found myself feeling sorry for her and Evan - who is not who he seems at the beginning. I did not care for Jen's dad or sister Mirah as they just did not seem nice to me but then again it is a whole different world where they live and how they choose to survive. There is a mystery in this book and some twists that kept me turning the pages long into the night. I must admit that I read a little over half of this book in one day and I don't do that often. I give this book 5 stars and would recommend it to everyone.
