Product Description

This is front-line work on an urgent topic, that practical kind of "how to" book on one level, and the "why to" theology work we have needed, on another. It is hard to think of any Christian who will have to read it who will not have acquired new perspectives on adoption and on God as Adopter, perspectives that we solely need and will surely welcome.

Publisher's Description

In this heart-felt theology of adoption, Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner argues that while the church has long understood the grounding self-concept of a Christian as a "child of God," it has failed to underscore that we all come into the family of faith by adoption. She explores adoption as a central theme in Scripture, as a doctrine of faith, and as a theological metaphor. Further, in using her own experience of adoption to inform her scholarship, Stevenson-Moessner offers help to all those touched by adoption, including adoptive parents. By beginning with chapters on barrenness, conception, and expectant waiting, and moving to discussions of the developing years, the search for identity, and challenges in the adoptive family, her writing begs a wide audience. Including case studies and interviews with adoptive parents, The Spirit of Adoption will be embraced by scholars, counselors, adoptive parents, and adopted children alike.

Author Bio

Jeanne Stevenson-Moessner is Professor of Pastoral Care at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, Texas. She is the author of A Primer in Pastoral Care.

I found this book to be very useful, on a topic that is often ignored: adoption and how it relates to us as Christians. I think some people will be a bit surprised at some connections drawn by the author from the work of St. Augustine and others, but only because of unfamiliarity. For instance, looking at the analogy of Paul in Galatians as Jesus coming into the 'wrong line of Hagar' to redeem Gentiles, or the idea of 'deification' through the grace of adoption. As long as these things aren't taken the wrong way (and the author is careful not to), they are valid concepts. If anything in here helps another reader to grasp the grace of God better, as it has for me, it's a very worthwhile read.
