Six college lectures begin the tour through what Spurgeon calls the "main pursuit of every true believer", followed by four addresses given to Monday-evening prayer meetings for other preachers and teachers. Five instructive sermons follow, imparting such directives that will show the believer that "...he is wise who selects for his raw material immortal souls, whose existence shall outlast the stars." In word and in deed, Spurgeon is a giant upon whose shoulders we should eagerly yet humbly aspire to stand.

Spurgeon was one of the most effective evangelists of all time. Under his ministry Victorian London saw revival on a scale never seen since. Yet Spurgeon would be the first to point your finger away from himself to the true author of repentance and reformation - he realised that without God at work, he could do nothing. Here is a collection of his lectures and talks to take people away from human inspired gimmickry and slavish mimicry to think through for themselves how to enable God to work in their lives and ministry.

I like his sermons and most of his books are very good. This one is my favorite. This book is like having Spurgeon as a mentor. Because it is compiled of sermons/lectures, it's like CH Spurgeon is sitting in a chair next to you sharing his wonderful insight into soul winning. This book is very practical and he outlines the do's and do not's of ministry. He also spends much time reminding us of two important truths--1.) God must be involved in it, or our labor is in vain, and 2.) New "converts" must first be "tested" (or proven) as truly converted to Christ. He gives many practical examples and personal experiences as to why this is so important. I plan to buy this book in bulk to give to young ministers. This book has been very encouraging to me.
