Publisher's Description

A number-one New York Times bestseller when it was originally published, THE SILMARILLION is the core of J.R.R. Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work that he could not publish in his lifetime because it grew with him. Its origins stretch back to a time long before THE HOBBIT. But THE HOBBIT was caught up in what Tolkien called "the branching acquisitive theme" he began in THE SILMARILLION, and eventually THE LORD OF THE RINGS emerged from this as well.
Tolkien considered THE SILMARILLION his most important work, and, though it was published last and posthumously, this great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all his other works. This is the story of the creation of the world and the happenings of the First Age, the ancient drama to which the characters in THE LORD OF THE RINGS look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part.
The three Silmarils were jewels created by Feanor, the most gifted of the Elves. Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord. Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. THE SILMARILLION is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy.
The book includes several other, shorter works in addition to THE SILMARILLION. Preceding it are "The Ainulindale," a myth of the Creation, and "The Valaquenta," in which the nature and power of the gods is set forth. After THE SILMARILLION comes "The Akallabeth," a tale of the downfall of the kingdom of Numeno, and finally "Of the Rings of Power," the connecting link to THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
This second edition features a number of minor textual corrections along with a letter written by J.R.R. Tolkien describing his intentions for the work, written more than twenty-five years before its eventual publication. As described by Christopher Tolkien in the preface, it serves as a brilliant exposition of his conception of the earlier Ages of Middle-earth.

I have had this book for six years, and I am just completing my second reading of it. I am a big fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and this book really made my re-reading of that series much more meaningful. Since my first reading of The Silmarillion back in 2008, I have read The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings twice, and I felt I really needed to re-read The Silmarillion again before launching into another reading of that series. I find the book hard to read - it requires great concentration and frequent reference to the index in the back. But it is well worth the effort.

I have the "Mass Market" paperback copy of this book. It is a little "dog-eared" but is holding up OK. If I were younger and needed the book to hold up for a few more decades, I would probably invest in one of the more expensive editions, but this one is OK.

The index that I mentioned above is actually an "Index of Names." It is an incredibly useful feature. If you do not have a good memory for names, you will find it helpful to put a bookmark at the index.

If you are a big fan of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, so much so that you read the series every few years (or more!), then I would HIGHLY recommend that you get a copy of The Silmarillion. It will enhance your understanding and enjoyment of Tolkien's wonderful epic.

The Silmarillion is a captivating tale of the world of Middle-earth before and after the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It is very detailed and has wonderful pronunciation guides and timelines to name a few parts of it. Wonderful book! A delightful addition to any LOTR library.

It has many more christian themes in this book than Lord of The Rings. I didn't like how the story would leap to other characters, but you have things in the back of the book to help you understand the vast world from the mind of J.R.R.Tolkein. It is very interesting tale of a parallel earth. And the christian themes are not quite as obvious as Chronicles of Narnia {another fine tale}, but I don't see that as bad or good, just distinctive. I believe this is the Tolkein at his best.Jehovah bless!

This is a really good book, but if you haven't read or didn't like The Lord of the Rings, you probably won't want to read The Silmarillion. It reads kind of like a history book (though a very engaging history book) of Middle Earth. It's long and hard to get into, but once you do get into it, it sweeps you off your feet.
