Like many girls during biblical times, the heroine of this story is a good shepherdess. During the day, she is a big help to her father in tending the sheep. At night, she sleeps while he tends to them. Then one night a bright star fills the sky and the little girl, still in her nightgown, goes out to find her father and their flock. He is not with his flock, however, and the girl sees him and a number of other shepherds running toward town. She follows them to a stable filled with animals, magi, shepherds - and a mother and baby who are "shining" and "radiant."

On the way home, the girl mentions that the baby was "brighter than the sun" and that "his light is in me now." The book ends: "She was happy and tired and wanted to sleep. So he picked her up, and she closed her eyes and was filled with the light of her own sunrise."

For me, this book falls short too many times. Clearly it's only suitable for children who are already well familiar with the biblical story of Jesus' birth, because it leaves out too many important details otherwise. (We don't even get to the main thrust of the book until about halfway through.)

Alan Marks' illustrations sometimes contradict the text; for instance, when the author writes that the girl sees shepherds running toward town, the illustration shows a huge angel in the sky that somehow the girl doesn't see - even though shepherds are running directly underneath the celestial being, going the *opposite* way from town. The author and illustrator also put the magi in the stable, instead of correctly putting them in Jesus' home, as the Bible relates the story.

I also don't like how the book describes and illustrations Jesus and Mary as glowing and shedding off bright light. This seems unnecessary - and is certainly extra-biblical.

    Overall Rating: Ho-hum.
