The Shadow of Your Smile by Susan May Warren tells of God working through tragedy. While running to escape a holdup, Noelle Hueston hits her head, losing all memory of her married life. As Noelle struggles to discover who she's become during her first 25 years of marriage, her family members question whether they should reveal her forgotten grief.

Five characters' perspectives are told, showing differing views of the situation, mainly focusing on two specific couples. As Eli and Noelle's marriage slowly rekindles the love it once knew so well, a romance also starts to develop between Emma and Kyle, Noelle's son. Eventually, all are drawn together by conflict and renewal.

Whereas Kyle and Emma see that they can be together despite grief and confusion, Eli struggles to be faithful to resentful Noelle, as she tries to reconcile the gap between her past and present. God works through all their circumstances to give them new realizations of relationships with Him. Frustrated, spunky Noelle; gruff, caring Eli; confused, poetic Emma; and angry, determined Kyle make up a very realistic cast. They blend well, although they are not always likable.
