I have been waiting for this series to be made into a movie...I'm still waiting. This movie butchered the book from which it got it's characters, The Dark is Rising, one of the books from The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. Read the books, forget the movie, you'll be glad you did.

This is an excellent Thriller/Horror flic that should never be seen by anyone under 13. The images of a young boy being chased and nearly trampled by the Rider, of people nearly frozen then drowned, of snakes and birds attacking on cue, and of violent battles could give anyone nightmares. It is Wicken in theology and disses Jesus twice! There is time travel, shape-shifting, and a nebulous God entity called "The Light" whom Will and the"Old Ones" serve. The villan appears at times as a physician, in mockery of the Great Physician, and brings into a worship service his dear mother, who in the next scene is an avatar that transforms into a large clutch of snakes that attack the "Old Ones". One of the "signs" Will seeks is a Celtic Cross but few of the elements of Christian grace are present. In the end it is Will's personal courage and superpowers that win the battle. Right battles wrong and prevails and Will and his family learn something about forgiveness and courage but only at a purely human level. Romantic love is mocked and only friendship is real. Agape love is not present. While there is little sex and the violence is mostly stylized, you have corrupted values, betrayal of the most horrific nature, and a deadly family secret that could only have survived in a totally insular as well as dysfunctional family. It was the silliest part of the plot.This is a fair "B" grade horror flic for a teen boys Saturday night but keep it out of your church library.
