Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  There's not a lot to tell about myself. Maybe that's why I have to make up stories. I grew up on a farm and still live on a farm in the same community. My roots go deep here in Kentucky. I'm married to a wonderful guy who sings bass in a gospel quartet. We have three children all married and nine beautiful grandchildren.

What was your motivation behind this project?  As I was researching the Shaker history for my previous book, The Believer, I kept coming across information about how the Civil War affected the Shaker communities in Kentucky. I wanted to share that historical time for the Shakers and also to give readers a look at the early days of the Civil War through a different viewpoint. My hero is an illustrator/reporter. At that time photography was in its infancy, so newspapers hired illustrators to cover the news, including the Civil War battles.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  First and foremost, I hope readers will be pulled into my story and live the adventure with my characters. At the same time I hope they will enjoy absorbing the history of the story and appreciate the faith journey of the characters.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Every time I research a historical era, I gain a fresh perspective on how people are basically the same in whatever era. And I'm always saddened by the sacrifices made by so many during times of war.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I love books and sometimes my favorite authors change according to what I'm reading at the time. My longtime pastor and friend, Brother Fred, has certainly been an influence in making the Bible stories come to life for me and in helping me see truths in my Bible study that also influence my characters.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  I enjoy getting feedback from those who have read or listened to my stories. I think most readers would be surprised to know how much what they say is a source of encouragement or at times, discouragement to a writer. But I thank all of you who read my stories and appreciate also those of you who take the time to share your reviews with others.
