Series: Sons of Encouragement

The last installment of Francine Rivers’ Sons of Encouragement series traces the life of Silas, the New Testament scribe and companion of the apostles Peter and Paul. It is based on the minimal sketch we receive written in Scripture (Acts 15, Acts 16, Acts 17), and elaborated by the author to breathe life into the character, revealing emotions, strengths and weaknesses, and a love for the Savior.
The story begins as Silas, who is emotionally, spiritually, and physically exhausted and discouraged after the brutal deaths of Peter and Paul, arrives in the home of Epanetus, a fellow Christian. The local believers treat him somewhat as a celebrity, because he had heard Jesus teach and had witnessed the risen Lord. They encourage him to write down the details of his life, from beginning to end, which begins a journey for Silas that expose his weaknesses and build up his faith.
I enjoyed the story of this man who lived in the shadow of greater men. It brought me right into first-century Christianity, and revealed the very real people who gave up everything to follow the Savior. – Tracey Bonsell, Christian Book

Francine Rivers writes her fact based stories from the bible, yet makes the story's real and understandable. The Sons of Encouragement series is the best ever written about special me in the Bible. It shows how God will use anyone who strives to know Him. You have to get the set. They are a MUST read. You will have a desire to put the story to your life. It opens the eyes of your heart and you will know that you have a lot to do in changing the way you look at the way you're living your life.

I love this book. It reads like a novel, but with historical accuracy. I learned so much about the loyal followers in the book. I will purchase the rest of the series based on my experience with Silas The Scribe.

It sent me to scripture to read more. The compelling drive for these men to tell others about Jesus is awesome.

Rivers does not disappoint with this novella. Her description of Silas and his background intrigued me and made me think more deeply about how persons in the early church actually lived, with all their struggles, fears and joys. Rivers' historical writing is fabulous - she's truly blessed by the Lord. Some great lessons to learn here...
