Product Description

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below." At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original C. S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old devil to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation and triumph over it -- ever written. Read by Joss Ackland. Unabridged. 5 CDs. 6 hours.

Author Bio

Clive Staples Lewis was born in 1898. Known as "Jack" by his friends, Lewis and his good friend J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, were part of a writer's club, The Inklings, who would meet at the local pub to discuss story ideas. Lewis's fascination with fairytales, myths, and ancient legends coupled with inspiration drawn from his childhood led him to write The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, one of the best-loved books of all time. Six further books in the immensely popular Chronicles of Narnia followed, and the final title, The Last Battle, received the Carnegie Award, one of the highest marks of excellence in children's literature.

I paid full price from Focus on the Family for this product and I was extremely disappointed in the way the story is handled. Changing between the actual role playing to the devils discussions was poorly organized and extremely frequent throughout. It was quite irritating....narration

This satire is an excellent portrayal of the thought process of satan and his tactics of subtleties, self centered logic and flesh driven indulgence. The letters could be an excellent source for listening and discussion sources for Sunday School classes. This is an excellent source for following the lines of back biting, confusion and dissension. Searching out scriptures and the benefits of belonging to Christ would be great a exercise to combat the logic satan uses with Wormwood. It is also is a great source to study boundaries.

An awesome audio book! I enjoyed it immensely. I am new to C. S. Lewis and am now a fan. This book (on cds) is quite an indictment against the garden variety Christian-and, uncomfortably, you may see yourself in some of the exchanges. You have to be a fairly deep Christian, I believe, in order to see things as clearly as Mr. Lewis presents some of the ideas.Very intelligent and also some wicked fun! It's like sneaking a peek at old 'family' letters.I thought the actor, Joss Ackland, had the perfect voice for this demon and his presentation of Uncle Screwtape, to my mind, was perfect! This is great listen!

It was very refreshing to hear proper English again. The Screwtape Letters are a treasure. They are a brilliant insight into are earthly and fleshly struggles presented in the most non-threatning manner for non-believers.

WOW - what a phenomenal look at people and our failings. Joss Acklund's reading is so superb you feel you are listening to the devil, himself. It is so easy to understand and brings the devils motives and the way he works so sharply into focus. While being humorous, it is at the same time very chilling. There are huge lessons for us all. I originally got this from the library. I was so moved by it, I feel the need to own it. I will be purchasing it so I can listen to it repeatedly for as a refresher.
