Product Description

Formerly Amish, Tilly Lantz Barrows and her younger sister Ruth Lantz find themselves plagued by the memories of their family's trauma when they return to Eden Valley for their parents' landmark wedding anniversary. Each woman carries a burden of past guilt, unknown to the other, along with unresolved relationships with their six married brothers...and aging parents. Headstrong Tilly urged Ruth to flee the People as well, welcoming her into the fancy English world. Neither had joined the Amish church. Tilly has since married and is the mother of identical twin girls. But Ruth remains single, still smarting from a failed courtship with her first beau. When she sees Will Kauffman again, old feelings resurface, leaving her to ponder anew how things might be different had she stayed in Lancaster County.

Meanwhile, Tilly is faced with a life-altering discovery that calls everything she knows into question. As past meets present, Tilly and Ruth struggle to find redemption and embrace acceptance. Can they face the future in the light of a past they can't undo?

I love the book but I thought Amish people shunned those who leave their group all the Amish books I've read they do

I think I probably enjoyed this book more than any of her latest books. But it took me a bit to really get into the story, probably 5 or 6 chapters. There were some very predictable parts, but there were some surprises. I have to say Tilly exasperated me to no end, I just wanted to help her find her way. I loved Ruth, she was a sweet, relatable character. I think one thing that I did take away from this book was the fact that so often we know that the Amish accept God's will as just that, but we don't see stories of the grief after the loss of a child and I think Ms. Lewis did a great job showing how the drowning of the youngest daughter changed the lives of the whole family. Well done, 4 stars from this reviewer, I think if it had grabbed me from page one this book would have been perfect.

The River, Beverly Lewis's newest Amish novel, is filled with emotional struggles and difficult family relationships.

Tilly and Ruth, two sisters who left their Amish family and settled into new lives in the English world, reluctantly visit their home and family and find that many of the hard feelings from their past are still very much alive. As they face hurts and fears they tried to leave behind, new truths come out and potentially life-changing decisions have to be made.

In her typical fashion, Beverly Lewis draws from her personal connection with the Plain people to paint a vivid picture of Amish characters and details of their lives. There is a great deal of tension between the family members who have left the Plain life and those who are still firmly rooted in their culture. Although the story does seem a little slow and drawn out in some parts, it is an engaging tale that runs strong with themes such as reconciliation, acceptance, and overcoming guilt.

I recommend The River to all fans of good Amish fiction. Thanks to Bethany House for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The River is a wonderful family story of love, forgiveness, understanding, and faith. God's love and salvation is a strong theme throughout the story as is the love of family. The characters were interesting and made me want to know more about their lives after the book ended. Beverly Lewis does another wonderful job of opening up the Amish world and giving us a glimpse into their world. Highly recommended! *I was given a copy of the book by the publisher in exchanged for an honest review.
